304 AC, Castle Black
The North was colder than Rhaegar had expected.
It was a weird thing since the most common word to describe the northernmost kingdom was 'cold'. He had been told many times that the summer's in the North were about as warm as some of the winter's the had in the south.
And Alyssa had joked several times that not even his dragon blood would be able to keep him warm in her homeland. How southerners weren't born to survive in the harsh lands she called home. While he knew that parts of it was true, he had always thought her to he exaggerating to make a point that she thought southerners were whiny.
But now he realise that she had not been exaggerating because as he looked around at his men, they were shivering and gathering around bonfires to keep warm.
"How does anyone survive in this kind of weather?" Oberyn Martell whined, walking up behind him as he stood upon one of the balconies overlooking the courtyard. "When I woke up this morning I almost thought my eyes had frozen shut. And that was not the only thing-"
"Do us all a favour and spare me the details," Rhaegar couldn't help but find some amusement from the dornish man's statement. "I suppose Alyssa was right all these years - us southerners are not built for this kind of weather."
"Has she ever not been right?" Arthur snorted, pulling the cloak he wore over his Kingsguard armour closer. "She did always tell us that we were whiny whenever we complained about winter in the Crownlands."
"Your Grace," Jon walked up behind them, closely followed by the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. It felt like a stab in the chest to have his son address him so courteously; he would at least have wished him to use his name. "The army from Winterfell should be arriving at dawn tomorrow. Robb sent me a raven."
"That is good," Rhaegar offered his youngest child a smile.
"Tell us, Prince Jon," Oberyn smirked, "how do men of the Night's Watch make sure their balls do not freeze and fall off."
"They do not," Jon snorted.
"The only way to do that is to find a woman," Eddison Tollett stated bluntly, "and there is a shortage of those here. Other than wildlings, the last woman to visit was Queen Alyssa."
"How sad my life has become when my balls are freezing and soon the only woman within reach will be my little sister," Oberyn whined.
