281 AC, Harrenhal
Alyssa watched suspiciously as the mystery knight rode out onto the grounds. His armour was mismatched, looking ready to fall apart any second and was far too big for the knights small frame. The short of stature knight had a shield blazoned with the image of a white weirwood with a laughing red face
She felt Rhaegar take her hand and she squeezed his in return as the knight pointed at his first opponent. It was a knight of House Haigh who looked surprised by the mystery knight's challenge but accepted it anyways, like any knight would when he was challenged.
Her mind tried to comprehend who could hide under the facade of the mystery knight and it seemed like most nobles and commoners alike wondered the same. But she was brought out of her own thoughts by the sound of the King muttering under his breath, dark and suspicious words of treason while his long fingernails dug into the arms of his chair. However this knight was Alyssa hoped he knew what he was doing because one wrong step and he would surely be boiled inside his own armour.
The flag was waved and the two knights rode towards each other, the dust flying up from the ground, creating a cloud that caused those close by to cough. And with a smooth move the Knight of the Laughing Tree managed to knock Ser Haigh off his horse, sending him flying backwards before hitting the ground with a thud.
The stands applauded, although not like they had done earlier because this joust was too easy. But whereas the crowd anticipated the next round, after the mystery knight had challenged a knight of House Blount, Alyssa was completely frozen as she saw Ser Haigh being helped out by a squire.
And there was no doubt in her mind that this wasn't one of the squires she had beaten up two days prior, for his broken nose and bruised face gave it away. But before she could think more of it, the flag was waved again. This time the two broke four lances against each other and when the mystery knight managed to knock his opponent to the ground Alyssa's blood ran cold.
The way The Knight of the Laughing Tree maneuvered his horse seemed oddly familiar. So her eyes immediately searched the stands, looking for her own family and when she located them she wasn't surprised by the sight before her.
Brandon was sitting there in his grey armour, the silver direwolf proudly displayed on his chest, watching the jousts in utter boredom, probably wanting to be the one participating instead of sitting there watching. Next to him sat Ned, accompanied, by Robert, and both looked mildly interested in what was happening, like most of the stands.
But it was the last two figures that made her realise that her assumptions must be true. Benjen was nervously bouncing his leg up and down, watching the scene wide eyed. And next to him sat Howland Reed, looking like a nervous wreck, his elbows resting on his knees and hands covering his mouth. And there was a clear absent in the stands that made Alyssa clench her free fist.
