When I woke up in the morning, I was still in my dad's arms. It was comforting, and I felt protected, much like when a little kid is afraid of the dark or a thunderstorm and sleeps with their parents. He didn't make me feel like a little kid though, he was very understanding.
I started getting up. I got off the bed, and let him sleep. I left his room and went into the kitchen and joined Dean for breakfast.
"Hey, you slept in late."
"Really? What time is it?"
"It's almost 2. Is Sam up?"
"Oh. I had no idea what time it was. No. He and I had a rough night. He'll probably be asleep for a while."
"What do you mean rough night? What happened?" He asked, really concerned.
"I just had a really really bad nightmare and....."
"Hey, it's ok. Don't tell me until you're ready. I don't want to make you upset."
"I'll tell you later."
"Of course." He said, handing me a cup of coffee. I went and sat down at Sam's laptop. I started looking for a case, but also had a tab up so I could look up stuff about the mark. I spent an hour looking up information for both the case and Dean. My dad came out and I shut the laptop a little more suddenly than I meant to.
"What are you looking up?"
"Just research." I said. It wasn't technically lying, I just didn't give specifics. He came over and opened up the laptop. He saw the tab about the mark.
"Alex, I know you want to help, but trust me, I looked at every website about it, and every library I could find. There's nothing about the cure."
"Sorry. I just wanted to make him get better."
"I know. All we can do right now is help him through everything and be here for him."
"Ok."
"Did you find any cases yet?"
"Not yet."
"Ok. I guess we'll just have to keep looking." I nodded and went back to looking for cases. I closed the tab about the mark. My dad grabbed some coffee and sat down next to me. "You feeling ok?"
"Yeah. I'm ok. Still a little shaken up, but I'm ok."
"Good." Just then, his phone rang.
~Sam's POV~
"Hello?" I answered.
"Hello, is this Sam Winchester?"
"Yes, who is this?" Hardly anyone has my number.
"My name is Rachel with child custody. I'm calling because you need to fill out some paperwork regarding custody of your daughter Alex. We require that you and Alex come down to my office so we can fill out the paperwork and make sure you are fit to be her legal guardian."
"Ok. We will come down today. Thank you for calling." I said, internally freaking out.
"Thank you." She said, then hung up.
~Alex's POV~
"Dad, who was that?"
"That was someone from child custody. You and I have to go to this lady's office and fill out paperwork and they have to make sure I'm fit to be your guardian."
"You'll do fine Dad. Just make sure you know how to answer the hard ones that will be obviously asked."
"Like what?"
"Like, 'why was she put up for adoption' which you could answer with 'my wife's job caused her to be gone a lot and my previous job did as well, so at the time, we could not take care of her'
And 'why did you suddenly want to take care of her again?' Which you could say 'my job changed and now I am around more. I am now a business man, and occasionally I go out of town, but she goes with me.' ""Yeah that would work."
"Don't worry, I'll help you if you get stuck. Plus, Dean will be there. It'll be ok Dad." He nodded then went to his room to get ready. I went to my room and threw on a nice blouse and a pair of jeans. My dad wore a button up plaid shirt with slacks, and Dean wore the same just in a different color.
We left in the impala and had a short but nervous drive to her office downtown. We pulled into the parking lot and went inside. It smelled almost like a doctor's office to me. Too clean, too perfect. We took the elevator up to her office and were let in.
"Please, take a seat." She said. She had slicked back dirty blonde hair in a ponytail, a nice button up blouse, and a pair of black slacks. She seemed to have no personality whatsoever and she made all three of us very uncomfortable. "I'm Rachel. I'm sure he told you why you are here, so let's get down to business. Sam, you are currently taking care of Alex correct?"
"Yes ma'am. Me and my brother Dean have been."
"Alex, how have they been treating you?"
"They've been amazing! My dad has been doing a great job as a father and Dean has become a friend and almost like a second father to me."
"Does it bother you that he put you up for adoption and suddenly wanted you back?"
"No, not at all." I replied "he had a good reason to put me up for adoption and I'm just happy to be back with my dad and Dean." She simply nodded which made me nervous.
"Sam, why did you put her up for adoption?"
"At the time, my wife's job and my job took us out of town a lot, and we couldn't take care of Alex. Now my job still takes me out of town, but she can come with me and its for shorter periods of time."
"What is it that you do Sam?"
"I'm a businessman."
"Ok." She said with no emotion " just sign this paperwork and she is officially in your custody."
Being the law school kid he was, he read everything through completely. Seeing as how he would officially be my guardian, I relaxed a little. I removed my arms from my lap and put them on the metal armrests of the padded iron chair I was sitting in. Suddenly, my arms started to burn. It hurt like heck, and both Sam and Dean noticed. I bolted out of the room.
