Chapter 1 – Murder at the palace
--- A few years earlier ---
The king and his wife, the queen, lay on the ground, their bodies bleeding out.
A boy appears and sees them, and falls to the ground, in shock. He cries out, “Father! Mother!” and falls to the ground.
When his cries are heard, the footman standing outside rushes in, realising there is something wrong. He rushes over places his hand above the man’s mouth and then the woman’s, checking for breath. When there is no warmth, he stands up and rushes out the door, calling for help.
The king’s doctor arrives and places a thumb against the man’s neck, feeling for a pulse just under the jawline. Then he does the same for the woman, and shakes his head.
The boy looks at him and cries out “No!” The doctor raises a hand as if to comfort him but the boy doesn’t respond, just crying uncontrollably and shaking.
An elderly woman comes in and takes a breath sharply as she realises what she sees before her. She looks at the doctor as she kneels in front of the dead man, and when he shakes his head sadly, cries “My son! My son!” and her cries fill the room.
The boy reaches over to her and she pulls him close, hugging him, her frail body shaking and letting out a loud moan, “Why?”
When the doctor goes to pull her up, she has already started shaking like the young boy. She is frozen, staring at the dead body of her son, the king. She picks up the boy and tries to turn his head away, but he cries out “No! Let me go!” and releases himself from her grip, jumping on top of his father’s body and sobbing.
