Chapter 6 – Fillun's future is decided

“I won't leave here!” Fillun shouted. “You already took me away from my family and from my people, and my country, and now you want to send me to be a monk in an abbey! Why are you doing this to me just when I am beginning to be happy again?”

Several years had passed. Fillun had changed from the short, pale boy he was when he arrived.  Now he was seventeen years old, and had grown a lot and filled out, beginning to look like the young man he was turning into.

Tales had spread of the rebels in Velastria who had invaded and spread across the land.  Their reputation had spread as they told tales of their exploits in the capital where they had killed the king.  And while they knew that there was a boy, a son of the king and queen, they didn't know what had happened to him.  There was a rumour that he had been brought to the next country.

Bonnar began to receive letters from Fillun's family, including his grandmother, explaining the changes in Velastria, and how the rebels were reported to be planning an attack on the capital. Also there were fears that they would travel to Cavonia to see if they could find the prince. He began to fear for Fillun's life, and as he thought about this and sought help, he decided to ask the advice of the knight chevalier, who had been so generous and kind in training Bonnar when he spent some time at the temple.

The knight chevalier advised him to place Fillun in the abbey, as a trainee monk, to ensure anonymity. Bonnar had hoped he could be taken on as a trainee knight, but he was too young to join – he needed to be eighteen and was only seventeen yet – and the public aspects of the knights' work meant that Fillun would be in more danger, whereas if he were part of an enclosed order with little contact with the outside world, he would be safer and Bonnar could rest easily. If after reaching eighteen he wanted to join the knights, this could be arranged. These discussions were had without Fillun's presence, as it was felt he would not be accepting of the serious decisions to be made. And when Bonnar sent a letter proposing this course of action to Fillun's grandmother, she responded affirmatively, happy to know her grandson would be safe and anonymous while the rebels were coming sniffing around.

The conversation betwen Bonnar and Fillun was a heated one, when Bonnar decided to explain what had been decided. Fillun was angry that he had not been consulted but Bonnar wanted him to understand that he was in danger.

“You must go into hiding, Fillun, your life is in danger if you remain here”

"But I'm not even in Velatria any more, how can they find me?”

"We have already had two visits from the rebels, one at the mountain lodge and one here at the castle. We don't know how long more we can protect your identity, even a child could let it slip. Do you really want to put your life in danger?”

Fillun thought about this and answered, "No, I guess not. But I will miss you, you have been the only person I trust while I'm away from my family.”

Fillun was sad when he realised he was going to have to get to know some new people again, and without the daily support of Bonnar. But Bonnar told him that he would come to visit him regularly, at night-time so that there would be no chance of anyone following him, and that when possible he would take him back out of the abbey to return to the castle and continue living there until they could make a plan for his return to Velastria.

" I wish my parents were alive, I wish ... “ Fillun started crying and put his hands to his face. Bonnar went up close to him and hugged him close.  Fillun looked in his eyes and smiled, he loved this man. He stepped up and brushed his lips off Bonnar's.
