Chapter 12 – Letters
Dear Fillun, my love,
I know that your heart is sore and that you are asking yourself why I have sent you away. I can't explain why those men did what they did to your parents, I can only tell you that you would not be safe if you stayed here. And because I love you so much and want you to be safe, I sent you away.
Lord Elstar - you will probably call him Bonnar, which is his first name - is a good and kind man and was a good friend of your father's. Do you remember him when he came to visit before? You played with him in the palace gardens and you thought he was a friendly man. That will not change and I know he will look after you and protect you, and try to keep you happy.
Fillun, my dear, you will not understand for now all that is happening in your life. It is sad that at a young age your heart has been hurt badly and that you have to go to another country with just my word to trust a man you've only met once before. But believe me, I trust him most after your father and I know that he will not do anything to harm you, and will make sure you are safe, which would not happen if you were living here.
I would love to hear from you, tell me about the castle, and Bonnar, and what you do during your days there. Cavonia is also a beautiful country, and it will be good for you to see another country, before you return. And you must believe this - someday you will return to us, and you will be close to me again, my love. I look forward to that day with joy and pray with all my heart that it will come soon.
I want you to know that I love you very much and I have asked Bonnar to write to me and tell me how you are getting on. I have also asked him to tell me when he thinks it will be safe for you to visit us in Velastria. That day will warm my heart, and I hope it comes soon.
With all my love
Your grandmother

Dear grandmother
I was very happy to get a letter from you and I hope you are happy. I have missed you a lot and I hope to see you soon. I still don't understand why I had to leave but I hope to see you and have talked to Bonnar about this.
Bonnar is very kind to me, he takes me out horse riding every day and we visit his cousins on the estate. The castle is much smaller than our palace but people here are very nice and everyone looks after me and is kind to me.
I have started taking some lessons like I used to take in the palace. The man who gives me the lessons is very old but a kind man.
I will write to you again soon and I send you all my love.
Your grandson
Fillun

Dear Princess Margaretha
It brings my heart gladness to write to you about Fillun and tell you that as time goes on, he is beginning to grow and lose some of his fear. I was a little concerned about him when I brought him here, knowing he would be lonely and miss his country and his family.
I wanted him to continue lessons like he used to do at the palace. An old scholar who is a friend of our family comes three times a week to teach him History, Latin and Algebra. For the moment there is no-one that can teach him Velastrian language but I try to talk to him in this dear language of my father's whenever I can.
I do not think it would be wise to arrange a visit to Velastria for now. However I will try to find a safe town in the mountains in the north of Velastria. We have a mountain lodge near there on the Cavonian side. I will bring Fillun there and then on to Velastria to meet you when we believe a safe passage can be arranged. I don't want to trouble his heart with talk of returning afterwards because I know that will be even harder.
I appreciate your trust and patience and hope that it is well placed. In the meantime the boy is safe, well nourished and growing healthy with exercise every day and plenty to occupy him and people to talk to. He has taken a special place in the hearts of my cousins and the people of the estate, who do not know his origins but yet accept him as a very genuine and sincere young man who is growing every day.
I remain your humble servant
Lord Elstar

Dear Lord Elstar
I have read with great pleasure your letter giving me news of Fillun. It gives my heart relief to know he sleeps safe at night and that you will guard him with your life. I cannot express how grateful I am for you taking this responsibility which in time, I hope the people of Velastria can repay you.
There is a town in the north of Velastria, called Zoroastria. This town is small but has some family connections and there is a hostel where we would be welcomed with open arms, and without a great fanfare. I would think that a good place to meet when we can arrange a convenient time, and when you can bring Fillun across the mountains without danger of being followed. I understand your horsemen are of great trust and this also helps me to know you have a backup.
We are hoping that some forces from the Knights of the Temple of Cavonia, which you so gallantly fought with in battle, will come to our aid when we need protection from the invasions which have been threatened. I fear that our precious capital city will not be able to withstand such an attack as the rebels have promised, and entreat you to talk with the knights as to how you could arrange a force that would equal and outnumber the rebels.
The future of our kingdom, and of our king, depends on your wise judgement. In this as in much things I am heartfully grateful and know you will love Fillun and protect him as I would. I hope I will live to see the day when you both return and reclaim your rightful positions. I promise you that your kindness will not go unrecognised and I know that as he grows, Fillun will come to depend on your trust and protection and will need that going forward in his life.
If you think there is anything else I can do or need more information about the plans of the rebels and so on, please do not hesitate to let me know.
I remain, your close friend and bond in trust
Margaretha, Queen Mother of Velastria

Dear grandmother
I want to say that I am not happy about the move to the abbey, the room is cold at night and we have to rise very early to pray. I know that Bonnar thinks I will be safe but why does he have to be so careful?
I have found a friend here, I haven't told him who I really am but we have some fun when we're not at prayer, or in the scribes' room. They have taught me how to illustrate the books and they like the way I do it. It's fun.
Bonnar has come to visit me a few times but I miss life in the castle and before that in the palace. I wish I could see you again.
I hope you are well and I look forward to seeing you when we can arrange a visit. I wish it is soon!
Your grandson

Dear grandson
I wish your heart could be a little more patient and accept that what we are doing is in your best interest. I wish we didn't have to do this and of course it would not be a normal course of action for you to be in an abbey, training to be a monk. But while we are living in dangerous times, the future King of Velastria is safe and that is what is most important.
I'm sorry that you have to do things and live in conditions you're not used to, but I promise you - please believe me - that this will not last for too long - and we will meet again.
Please do what Bonnar asks you to do. He will know what you need and what will help you to get through this difficult period. After that, you will come back to Velastria and you will be King of our country. Please pray that you will be safe until then and that the days to come will keep us all safe.
I love you with all my heart
