Chapter 2 – Sad times
--- Two days later ---
“Drink this up, Fillun.” orders the frail lady gently, raising his limp body out of the bed into her arms. He shakes his head and she forces him to drink, a mixture of warm milk and honey, to which she has added a measure of brandy, to calm his nerves. The shock has kept him asleep and feverish for the last two days, as the scene has replayed over and over in his mind. He has been shaking and throwing his arms about while dreaming and shouting “No!” in his sleep.
The boy begins to wake and when he looks around and realises where he is, he remembers something and starts to cry again. This is a heart-breaking cry, from a boy who has found his parents dead, and is just beginning to remember the scene. As he begins to cry, the woman hugs him tight and her tears fall freely and silently on the boy’s head as he cries.
The doctor comes in and looks at the woman, and she shakes her head. Seeing this, the doctor looks down grimly. He shakes his head and looks up at the woman again, turning around and walking out as he cannot help.
--- A few weeks later ---
“Fillun, you are going to go away on a trip.” said the frail woman.
“Where, grandma?” Fillun looks up at her, slightly afraid.
“A friend of the family will come and take you to his castle in Cavonia. Do you remember Bonnar, the friendly young man who came and played with you before when we were in the mountains?”
“Yes, grandma,” he replies, softly, looking down in sadness. “Why do I have to leave here? I want to stay with you.” he pleas with her, looking at her in shock.
“I think you know why, Fillun, my love. The bad men that did those things to your poor father and mother might come back and try to do the same to you. “ she replied, her voice almost breaking.
“I don’t want to leave you!” cried the boy, hugging her tight. “Please don’t make me go away!”
“I know, my love, I wish we didn’t have to do this, but you are not safe here, and we want you to be safe. Do you understand that?” the woman explained, tipping up his chin and looking into his eyes as she spoke.
The boy just cried and gave no response.
“This man is a good man and he will care for you Fillun, and you will be safe with him. And you have all my love and I will write to you, and we will see each other again soon,” added his grandmother.
"Please don't let him take me from you, grandma!" cried the boy as he wrapped his arms around her.
"I wish I could keep you here, Fillun. But neither you nor I would sleep at night because we'd both be afraid that the bad man would come for you. So I think it's best if you go with the good man and live with him for a while. Please remember I love you and be strong for your grandma."
