Chapter 9 – A surprise visit
A year passed quickly, but the days were mostly the same. Fillun found himself doing the same things day after day, and doing a lot of it as if he was sleep-walking: praying, chanting, working in the scribes' room, eating, and chatting with with Brother Michael. He became well known by the monks but it was not custom to ask about each other's family origins, so he didn't need to tell any lies. He was relieved about this. However Brother Michael had pressed him about where he had grown up and what he had done, and he just changed the subject or brushed off the subject each time with a little lie. This made him uncomfortable and he wished he didn't have to do it.
Through Bonnar, he learned of the changes happening in Velastria. First after his parents were killed, there was a period of national mourning. After that, there was public unrest: even though the government continued to do its job, there were questions about who would continue as king – or queen. Because both were now dead, and their son was nowhere to be found, people didn't know what to believe, and the public felt ill at ease.
The rebel group came to visit Bonnar. Although they didn't know who he was, he remembered their faces well. They had been there, part of the group that had invaded his father's lands and killed him. He thought back to that time which had been so important in deciding the course of action he would take over the next number of years.
He had been eighteen years old then, the age that Fillun was now. Before he left the lands he had asked his cousins and the people on the estate to pretend that he was dead, promising that when he could, he would return to avenge his father. At that time he left Velastria, and on the advice of Fillun's father, he came to Cavonia to join the knights.
So the rebels thought he was dead, and didn't know who he was. But the same rumour hadn't been spread about Fillun, so they had every reason to believe that he was alive. And the rumours in Velastria where that he was living in a castle in Cavonia. They had traced him here and they were sniffing for blood, like wolfhounds.
The next few days, they stayed in the area, visiting Bonnar several times, asking him and the people on his estate where Fillun had gone. But Bonnar had already warned them all and given them a story. He had prepared them in advance by telling them that Fillun had returned to Velastria, to see his family, and was killed on the journey there when he fell off his horse.
The rebels weren't sure if this story was true but everyone on the estate seemed to give the same story, and no-one else they asked in the area seemed to know, so they decided to go back to Velastria and help with preparations for the invasion of the capital.
Bonnar, convinced that the plan had worked, had written to Fillun's grandmother and sent his two horsemen with the message. He told her that now Fillun had reached eighteen years of age, he could join the knights in the temple, and train to fight. He didn't have a plan yet but he knew that if the rebels were planning to invade the capital, he would need a plan for counter-attack. Fillun's grandmother wrote back that she agreed it was time to take him out of the abbey and if he could progress in his plan to take back the throne, then this was the best plan to follow.
Bonnar went to speak with the abbot and explained this. Fillun was surprised to see him walking in the cloister, and went to say hello.
“Bonnar!” he shouted across the cloister, breaking the rule of silence during outside prayer.
Bonnar mouthed 'Later' to him and after he had finished speaking with the abbot, he went to speak in private with Fillun in the study, as before.
Fillun hugged him. He didn't want to kiss Bonnar as he was too excited and now wasn't the time.
“So it's true? I can leave the abbey?”
“Yes Fillun. You can leave the abbey. You can return with me now if you want. The abbot has agreed to release you and he understands that you wouldn't have stayed here.”
“Yes!” Fillun punched the air and hugged Bonnar.
