 Chapter 3 – Night-time in the forest

A horseman with a dark cloak is galloping through the forest, followed by two young horsemen.  All that can be heard is the fast clip-clop of the horses’ hooves and their breathing as they disappear into the night.

As dawn begins to break, they come out of the forest and up into the mountains.  For a short moment the horseman stops and turns around to check who is following him.  The two young horsemen are following and stop for a moment to allow him to take a breath.  When he can see that no-one has followed them through the forest, he continues up into the hills and on to the house which sits on the mountain top and looks out over the valley.

He dismounts from the horse as he arrives at the house, and a footman takes his horse.  He is holding a bundle inside his cloak which appears to be a boy who is asleep.  He goes into the house and up the stairs.  A maid is standing at the door of one of the rooms, the horseman nods at her in recognition.  As he walks in she stands aside, and he places the boy gently on a bed.  He pulls some blankets over him and fondles his head gently, walking back out of the room and on to his own.

As day breaks, the man and the boy sleep in their rooms, and the day starts quietly as the servants go about their business.
