Thanksgiving Morning
Dexter Avenue — Eric and Lexie's Apartment
The apartment smelled like Thanksgiving.
Butter.
Fresh herbs.
Roasting turkey.
Coffee.
Somewhere in the living room, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade played softly on the television. Neither of them was really watching it. It simply filled the apartment with the familiar hum of Thanksgiving morning.
Outside, Seattle was cold and gray.
Inside, the oven had already made the kitchen comfortably warm.
Lexie stood in front of it wearing one of Eric's old university sweatshirts over leggings, an apron tied around her waist that had somehow already accumulated flour, butter and what looked suspiciously like cranberry sauce.
Her hair had started the morning in a tidy ponytail.
It no longer resembled one.
She stared at the turkey with narrowed eyes.
"Hm."
Behind her, the kettle clicked.
Eric poured hot water into his mug before reaching for the French press he'd already made earlier that morning.
He set a fresh cup of coffee beside her without saying a word.
Lexie picked it up automatically.
"Thank you."
"Mhm."
She took a sip.
Still staring at the turkey.
"I think it needs more butter."
Eric looked at it.
"It does not."
"You didn't even inspect it."
"I don't believe an inspection is necessary."
"I think it looks... dry."
"It has approximately an entire stick of butter beneath the skin."
"It could have emotional dryness."
He looked at her.
"...Emotional dryness."
"Mhm."
"The turkey."
"Yes."
A beat.
"I see."
Lexie nodded once.
"I'm glad we're on the same page."
"We're demonstrably not."
She laughed.
"I just don't want to ruin Thanksgiving."
"You won't."
"What if I do?"
"You won't."
"What if everybody politely tells me it's good because they don't want to hurt my feelings?"
"They won't."
A beat.
"I'd rather replace the guests than the turkey."
Lexie laughed.
"...You cannot possibly mean that."
Eric took another sip of his tea.
