Early Morning
Dexter Avenue — Eric and Lexie's Apartment
Soft morning light spilled through the windows overlooking Elliott Bay, stretching long rectangles across the hardwood floor. Somewhere outside, a ferry horn echoed across the water.
The kettle clicked softly as it finished boiling.
Eric stood at the kitchen island in a navy T-shirt and dark lounge pants, a mug of tea resting beside a neatly folded printed operating room schedule. Several patient charts lay open beside it, along with a yellow legal pad covered in his small, precise handwriting.
A red pen rested between his fingers as he made one final note in the margin before setting it aside.
Behind him came the soft shuffle of bare feet.
Lexie wandered into the kitchen looking only half awake, one of Eric's old university sweatshirts hanging loosely over her pajama shorts. Her hair was still adorably disheveled from sleep.
She rubbed one eye before heading straight for the coffee maker.
Eric glanced over.
"Morning."
"Mmm."
She blinked at him.
"...Is that tea?"
"Yes."
"You know coffee exists."
"I'm aware."
She yawned.
"I worry about you sometimes."
"I'm aware of that as well."
The coffee finished brewing.
Lexie poured herself a mug before climbing onto the stool beside him.
She took one grateful sip before her eyes wandered to the paperwork spread across the island.
"...That's today?"
Eric nodded.
"The filming begins at eight."
Lexie leaned closer.
At the top of the schedule, someone had typed in bold letters:
FIRST OFFICIAL EDUCATIONAL LASER PEN DEMONSTRATION
Below it—

Hospital Documentary Crew
Her eyebrows climbed a little higher with every line.
"...You're going to be on camera all day."
Eric exhaled quietly.
"Unfortunately."
She smiled into her coffee.
"I don't think I've ever seen you nervous."
"I'm not nervous."
"No?"
"No."
"You've read that schedule three times."
"I've read it twice."
She looked at him.
"Of course, you counted."
A laugh escaped before she could stop it.
"I am genuinely looking forward to watching you pretend an entire camera crew doesn't exist."
