Trauma Bay

Silence lasted all of two seconds.

Then Arjay's pager vibrated.

He glanced down.

TRAUMA ACTIVATION. ETA: 3 MINUTES.

Without hesitation, he turned toward the ambulance breezeway.

The ambulance doors burst open less than three minutes later.

"Scott Benton. Thirty-eight-year-old male," the paramedic called as the stretcher rolled into the trauma bay. "Construction worker. Fell approximately fifteen feet from scaffolding."

"Initial GCS fifteen."

"No loss of consciousness."

"Complaining of neck pain, left shoulder pain and tingling in both hands."

"Vitals stable throughout transport."

The trauma team moved immediately.

"On three."

"One... two... three."

The patient transferred smoothly onto the trauma table.

Arjay took position at the head of the bed.

"Airway's patent."

"Breath sounds equal bilaterally."

"Collar stays on."

The charge nurse cut away the patient's shirt.

"No obvious chest trauma."

"Left distal radius deformity."

A monitor chimed.

"Pressure one twenty-eight over seventy-six."

"Heart rate ninety-four."

"Satting ninety-nine percent."

The patient grimaced.

"My neck..."

"I know," Arjay said evenly. "Don't move."

Owen Hunt strode into the trauma bay, already pulling on a pair of gloves.

"What've we got?"

"Thirty-eight-year-old male," Arjay replied. "Fall from approximately fifteen feet. GCS fifteen. Neck pain. Bilateral hand tingling."

Owen nodded.

"FAST."

"Negative."

"Portable chest."

"Negative."

"Head CT."

"Negative."

"C-spine CT."

"No acute fracture."

Owen glanced once at the monitor before looking back at the patient.

"Good."

"Splint the wrist. Keep the collar on."

"We'll admit him overnight for observation."

The urgency in the room eased almost immediately.

Orthopedics had already been paged.

Scott managed a tired smile.

"So..."
