Sunday Morning
Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital
Fourth floor — Residents' Lounge
Sunday mornings always felt different.
The corridors were quieter.
The elevators less crowded.
The constant rhythm of weekday surgeries had eased into a slower pace, leaving the hospital with the strange calm that only existed for a few hours before emergencies inevitably reclaimed it.
Lauren pushed open the door to the residents' lounge, a stack of patient charts tucked neatly beneath one arm.
She had already finished prerounds.
Already checked overnight labs.
Already reorganized the morning patient list into an order that made more sense than the one printed by administration.
Inside, Russ Harlan and Arjay Shaikh stood beside the conference table, both staring into a large insulated tote bag.
Neither appeared to have noticed she'd walked in.
"Uhm, hi..."
Lauren glanced between them.
"...Should I be concerned?"
Russ looked up with the expression of someone who had just uncovered buried treasure.
"I don't know how to process this."
Lauren crossed the room.
"What happened?"
Instead of answering, Russ simply stepped aside.
The top of the insulated bag had been folded open.
Across the lid, written in unmistakably familiar handwriting, were the words:
LAUREN, RUSS & ARJAY
Eat this before somebody steals it.
Yes, Russ, this means you too.
Lauren smiled despite herself.
"Dr. Grey."
"Right?" Russ said. "She packed us Thanksgiving."
Inside were neatly stacked containers.
Turkey sandwiches.
Stuffing.
Roasted vegetables.
Individual portions of mashed potatoes.
Slices of pumpkin pie wrapped carefully in parchment paper.
Three bottles of water.
Three pieces of fruit.
And beneath everything...
Napkins folded into perfect rectangles.
Arjay picked up one of the apples.
A small handwritten note had been stuck to it.
Eat something that grew naturally.
He smiled.
"Dr. Keaton."
Lauren nodded once.
"Obviously."
Russ looked from one of them to the other.
"...How is that obvious?"
Lauren pointed at the apple.
"The fruit."
Russ blinked.
"That's your evidence?"
"And the napkins."
