Morning
Dexter Avenue — Eric and Lexie's Apartment
The bedroom was still dim, the blackout curtains keeping most of the Seattle morning outside.
Only a thin strip of light slipped through the gap in the fabric, stretching across the hardwood floor and stopping just short of the bed.
The apartment was silent.
No Meredith shouting downstairs.
No Alex complaining.
No Jackson hogging the bathroom.
No footsteps on attic stairs.
Just quiet.
Lexie stirred first. She blinked lazily before smiling to herself.
His room.
No...
Their room.
She rolled onto her side.
Eric was still asleep beside her.
One arm rested beneath his pillow while the other lay loosely across his stomach, the blankets pushed down to his waist. His breathing was slow and even, nothing like the clipped efficiency he carried through the hospital every day.
She watched him for a long moment.
"You know..." she whispered. "You're way less scary when you're asleep."
No response.
She tilted her head.
"It's actually kind of disappointing. I was expecting more... evil mastermind. Maybe one eye open."
Still nothing.
She smiled to herself.
Very carefully, she reached over and traced a finger down the bridge of his nose.
Then across his cheek.
"You know why this is unfair?" she continued softly. "Because if people met you like this first, they'd think, 'Oh, he looks nice.' And then you'd wake up and start asking impossible questions and making everyone rewrite their notes."
She poked his shoulder.
"You even look smug when you're asleep."
Without opening his eyes, Eric spoke.
"I've been awake for nearly three minutes."
Lexie's hand froze. "...No."
"I have."
Her eyes widened. "Oh, my God."
She dropped her forehead onto the pillow.
"You let me keep talking?"
"I did."
"...That's so mean."
"I was gathering data."
She peeked up at him.
"You're making fun of me."
"A little. Normally, this all ends with a kiss."
She pointed accusingly.
"See? That's exactly what I mean."
"What?"
"I was gone for weeks."
"You were."
"And the first thing you do after I move back is prove you're right."
