Morning
Downtown Seattle

The SUV rolled easily through the morning traffic.

For once, there was no urgency.

No ambulance weaving through intersections.

No pager vibrating against a belt.

No countdown to an operating room.

Just green lights.

Coffee.

And nowhere they needed to be.

The windows were cracked just enough to let the cool morning air drift through the cabin.

The radio played softly in the background. Neither of them paid much attention to what song it was.

Lexie rested one elbow against the door, watching the city drift past outside her window.

Seattle looked...

Different.

Not because it had changed.

Because she wasn't racing through it.

A cyclist coasted along the waterfront trail.

A florist arranged buckets of fresh flowers outside her shop.

Someone walked a golden retriever that looked entirely too happy for eight in the morning.

They stopped at a red light.

Eric reached into the inside pocket of the charcoal coat folded neatly beside him.

He unfolded a single sheet of paper.

His eyes skimmed down it.

Then, just as quickly, he folded it again and slipped it back into the pocket before the light changed.

Lexie caught the movement.

"...What's that?"

"A reminder."

She eyed him suspiciously.

"...You make reminders on paper?"

"I prefer paper."

"Of course you do."

The corner of his mouth twitched.

"I've been told it's predictable."

"It is."

She smiled before turning back toward the window.

"...I've never noticed that."

"What?"

"That bakery."

She pointed toward the corner.

"The one with the blue awning."

Eric followed her gaze.

People wandered in and out carrying warm paper bags.

Even through the open window, the smell of fresh bread drifted into the SUV.

"...It always smells amazing."

"You've noticed?"

"I've smelled it."

She laughed quietly.

"I've just never had time to stop."

Eric looked back at the road.

"...Neither have I."

The answer lingered longer than either of them expected.

Lexie watched another block pass.

It was strange.
