Friday Morning
Sixth Floor — Pediatrics Wing
Conference Room

The conference room looked like it had survived a small administrative hurricane.

Folders covered every available surface.

Patient charts.

Housing assignments.

Transportation schedules.

Consent packets.

Supply inventories.

Half-finished rooming lists.

Three empty pizza boxes from sometime around midnight.

And approximately four people operating on far less sleep than medically recommended.

Lexie sat at the end of the conference table, staring at a spreadsheet that had stopped making sense nearly twenty minutes ago.

Across from her, April was highlighting something.

Again.

Jackson had fallen asleep sitting upright sometime around four in the morning and now looked personally offended by consciousness.

Alex stood at the whiteboard reviewing arrivals.

"Okay."

He pointed at a list.

"If anybody changes room assignments again, I'm setting the printer on fire."

"You can't... do that," April chuckled nervously.

"Watch me."

Lexie rubbed her eyes.

The clock on the wall read 6:43 a.m.

She hadn't gone home.

None of them had.

The African Project would arrive that evening.

Every available minute had been spent preparing.

Somewhere around three in the morning they had collectively decided sleep was no longer realistic.

A knock sounded at the conference room door.

Nobody looked up.

"Come in."

The door opened.

The smell hit first.

Coffee.

Not vending machine coffee.

Not cafeteria coffee.

Good coffee.

Lexie's head snapped up immediately.

Eric stood in the doorway carrying two cardboard drink trays and a large paper bag that looked heavy enough to qualify as a trauma consult.

He set everything down on the conference table.

Breakfast sandwiches.

Bagels.

Fruit cups.

Muffins.

More food than any reasonable person would've purchased.

Jackson sat up instantly.

"Oh thank God."

Alex tossed the marker aside and stepped toward the food.

"I knew I liked you."

"I wasn't aware my approval rating was in question."
