Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital
Friday Evening
Third Floor — Room 3031
Security had arrived first.
Then Owen.
Then half the emergency department.
Mark had been taken downstairs covered in blood while Richard tried to keep the situation from turning into a public spectacle.
CT scans ruled out any intracranial bleeding.
No orbital fracture.
No facial fractures.
Just bruising, lacerations, and enough swelling to make him look worse than he was.
Given who had thrown the punch—and who had received it—the hospital quietly moved him to a private room.
Partly for privacy.
Partly to keep gossipers away if word got out.
Mostly because nobody wanted Seattle Grace Mercy West's Chief of Plastics spending the night in the ER explaining why the Chief of Neurosurgery had nearly broken his face.
By evening, Mark Sloan was stable.
Sore.
Humiliated.
And alone with the consequences, but only a few hours.
The room was quiet.
Mark looked awful.
Not catastrophic, but bad enough.
Purple bruising spread across one side of his face.
His lip was split. His jaw was swollen. There were stitches above his eyebrow.
A face that had definitely attended a fight and definitely lost.
Callie sat beside the bed.
Arizona stood near the window, staring out at the parking lot below.
Nobody seemed particularly interested in speaking.
Seattle's evening lights flickered against the glass.
The silence stretched.
Then Callie finally broke first.
"Eric almost killed you."
Mark stared at the television mounted in the corner.
Muted.
Dark.
He didn't answer.
Because he knew.
He remembered every second of it.
The punch.
The floor.
The blood.
The empty look on Eric's face afterward.
Somehow, that was the part he couldn't stop thinking about.
Callie folded her arms.
"You could've lost an eye."
Still nothing.
Arizona remained quiet.
Watching.
Waiting.
Because unlike Callie—
Arizona knew something wasn't right.
Mark wasn't angry.
He wasn't threatening lawyers.
He wasn't demanding security.
Hell, he wasn't even blaming Eric.
