JUNE — Tuesday Morning
Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital
Hospital Parking Lot

Eric turned the SUV into the hospital entrance, the familiar route unfolding ahead of them.

Normally the drive barely registered. Ten minutes, maybe less, depending on traffic.

Today it felt quieter.

Longer.

Beside him, Lexie stared out the windshield, her hands folded loosely in her lap. Every so often her fingers twisted together before going still again.

She hadn't said much since they'd left the apartment. Not enough that most people would notice.

But Eric noticed.

Over the last few weeks she'd developed a habit of drifting away for a few seconds at a time, disappearing into thoughts she never quite shared.

Not far.

Just enough.

The same way she'd noticed every tiny crack in him after the shooting, after the crash.

The same way she'd sat beside him through sleepless nights and panic and silence without demanding explanations.

She'd given him room when he needed it.

So he gave her room now.

A few moments later, Lexie glanced over and caught him looking.

Her fingers stilled. Then she reached across the center console and slipped her hand into his.

Eric smiled immediately. He squeezed her hand once before lifting it to his lips and brushing a kiss across her knuckles.

Lexie laughed under her breath.

It shouldn't have surprised her anymore.

He did it constantly.

And somehow it still did.

Her thumb brushed his cheek before her hand settled briefly against the back of his neck, playing absentmindedly with the hair there.

"Busy day?" Eric asked.

Lexie exhaled.

"Yeah."

A beat.

"Alex recruited us."

Eric sighed dramatically.

"Oh dear."

That earned exactly the reaction he'd hoped for.

A smile.

"The kids from Africa are coming next week," she said. "He wants help getting everything ready."

"I heard about that."

He glanced over.

"Need an extra pair of hands?"

"No, it's okay."

She shrugged.

"It's me, April, Jackson..."

"Well." Eric turned into the parking lot. "If it becomes a disaster, you know where my office is."

Lexie smiled.

"Okay."

A few minutes later he parked several rows away from Alex's trailer and shut off the engine.

For a moment neither moved.
