Friday Morning
Fifth Floor — Neuro Wing
Lauren was reviewing post-op notes at the nurses' station when she spotted Lexie coming down the hallway.
Her first thought was Eric.
It usually was.
The two of them had become so predictable that half the floor could identify when one was looking for the other.
"Hey. Looking for Dr. Keaton?"
Lexie slowed.
The question seemed to catch her off guard.
For a second she just stood there, then shook her head.
"Actually..."
Lauren frowned immediately.
Lexie looked nervous.
Not normal nervous.
Not presenting-a-case nervous.
Not Chief-is-angry nervous.
Something else.
Something worse.
"I was looking for you."
Lauren straightened. That was unexpected.
"Me?"
Lexie nodded.
"I need your help. Can we talk?"
The words came out quietly.
Lauren felt her stomach tighten.
Something was wrong.
Seriously wrong.
Because Lexie Grey was not someone who asked for help easily.
Not like this.
Not with that look on her face.
Lauren closed the chart.
"Yeah."
A pause.
"Of course."

A few minutes later they stepped into a supply room near the end of the hallway.
The door clicked shut behind them. The room smelled faintly of disinfectant and unopened packaging.
For several seconds neither spoke.
Lauren waited.
Lexie stared at the floor.
Then finally—
"I need a favor."
Lauren relaxed slightly.
Okay.
A favor. Manageable.
"What kind of favor?"
Lexie swallowed.
"I need an OB appointment."
Lauren blinked.
Once.
Twice.
The sentence took a moment to register.
"An OB appointment?"
Lexie nodded.
Lauren's mind immediately jumped to several possibilities.
None of them particularly alarming.
Trying to get pregnant.
