Evening
Fourth Floor — Residents' Lounge
End of shift.
Lexie stood in front of the lockers, changing out of her scrubs.
A soft gray blouse.
Dark jeans.
Her hair pulled free from its ponytail.
She adjusted the sleeves and checked herself in the small mirror attached to the locker door.
Behind her, Eric leaned against the locker cabinets.
Arms crossed over his chest.
Watching.
Smiling.
Not even pretending to do anything else.
Lexie caught him staring in the mirror.
She rolled her eyes.
"That's creepy."
"What?"
"You watching."
"Darling, I've watched you get dressed at home."
Lexie stared at him, then grabbed her discarded scrub top and threw it at his face.
"Creepy!"
Eric laughed, pulling the shirt off his head.
The sound echoed through the mostly empty lounge.
"Well, you love me."
Lexie walked over until she was standing between his knees.
"You're lucky I do."
His smile widened immediately.
"Exceptionally lucky."
She kissed him.
The kind of kiss that promised more later.
Eric's hand settled on her waist.
Neither of them moved away.
For a second the hospital disappeared.
Then Eric's pager went off. The shrill sound cut through the room.
Lexie groaned.
"Ignore it."
A second later her pager sounded too.
They both froze.
Another page followed.
Then another.
Eric glanced down at his pager.
His smile vanished instantly.
Lexie felt it before she understood it.
One second he was relaxed.
The next, nothing.
His eyes locked onto the screen.
Motionless.
A strange stillness settling over him.
"Eric?"
He didn't answer.
His jaw tightened.
"Eric."
Slowly, he looked up.
The color had drained from his face.
"Car versus truck."
A beat.
"Torres."
Another.
"Robbins."
The word barely escaped him.
