Evening
Dexter Avenue — Eric and Lexie's Townhouse
The townhouse was dark when Lexie got home.
She unlocked the door and stepped inside.
"Eric?"
Nothing.
Right.
Tacoma.
Driving.
She knew that.
Lexie closed the door behind her and stood there for a moment anyway.
The house felt different when Eric wasn't in it.
Not empty.
Just quieter.
She dropped her keys into the bowl by the door and shrugged out of her coat.
His coat wasn't hanging beside hers.
His shoes weren't by the wall.
His conference bag wasn't sitting somewhere inconvenient despite the fact that Eric would insist wherever he'd put it was perfectly logical.
Lexie looked toward the kitchen.
Her mug from that morning was still beside the sink.
Eric's tea tin sat on the counter.
One of her journal articles had somehow migrated onto the dining table.
She crossed over and picked it up.
Bailey's fistula protocol.
Of course.
Lexie stared at it.
Day three.
Eli had been right.
Mark had kissed her.
Excellent day.
She dropped the paper back onto the table.
"Great."
The word disappeared into the quiet house.
Lexie went upstairs.
- - - - -
She changed into pajama pants and one of Eric's shirts.
She didn't think about choosing it.
It was there.
She put it on.
By the time she noticed, she'd already buttoned half of it.
Lexie looked at herself in the mirror.
Then down at the shirt.
"Oh, come on."
She considered changing.
Didn't.
Instead, she pulled her hair back and went downstairs.
The clock said Eric still had time before he should be home.
Lexie checked her phone.
Nothing.
She should call him.
Her thumb hovered over his name.
Then stopped.
Not while he was driving.
She wanted to tell him in person.
That was reasonable.
Actually reasonable.
