love on the brain

There were times Nate wished he could just tell Cassie the truth.

As she bawled her eyes out or accused him of wanting Maddy back. It was hard dating two best friends, as Maddy reported back on all the sweet things Nate had been doing to win her back and Cassie's heart broke for her best friend and for herself.

Maybe a part of him, the insecure little boy, feared she would be scared away from the monster within him, from his father's disgusting secret. That it would destroy the romantic montage he envisioned for their future.

Another part of him, the sick, manipulative, twisted individual, maybe wanted to see how far she would go. How much she was willing to give up. How much she was willing to accept. How much she was willing to trust.

Nate knew he had the power to destroy Cassie completely. And Cassie, unknowingly, had the power to execute the same punishment on him.

"My situation with Maddy is complicated. You know that." He would try to explain. "I'm doing this to protect you too."

"I don't understand how telling Maddy you still love her is going to make this better." She would say, as tears streamed down her face.

"I love you, Cassie. I really do." His brown eyes would meet hers, his hand would softly touch the side of her face. "Do you love me?"

And Cassie's heart swelled and sung and exploded.

"I love you too."
