The King has a new Queen.
Those were the whispers down the school corridors that morning, as Nate and Cassie walked hand in hand. After a weekend of love and makeovers, the duo had made their debut on Monday morning breaking up the monotony of the first day back at school.
To say it was a big shock for the young community of East Highland was an understatement.
"Wasn't he dating her best friend?"
"I heard he's gay"
"Cassie Howard is a fucking slut"
Here was Nate Jacobs, star quaterback, rich boy, bully, abuser, the guy who got beat up on New Years Eve by a drug dealer, dating Cassie Howard, his ex-girlfriend who he once strangled's best friend, his good friend's ex-girlfriend, the girl with the sex tapes, the girl who orgasmed on a carousel at a school carnival. You couldn't make this type of drama up.
The blonde's wardrobe change had also not gone unnoticed by her classmates- and whilst Cassie's revealing outfit had peeked the attention of the straight male population of the school, the girls seemed to be more judgemental of the low cut lace and mini skirts.
"She's dressed like a hooker."
"She's copying Maddy."
"Fuck, Nate Jacobs is a lucky bastard."
Despite the whispers, Cassie confidently strutted through school on Nate's arm all week. She felt proud to be seen with him, to be his. She revelled in the attention she had garnered from all the other boys as they watched her walk past. The way their eyes followed her form, or the way a guy's hand would smack another guy on the arm to point her out.
Her diamond N would sparkle under the bright lights of the hallway. A reminder that they could only look but not touch. A reminder to all the boys that wanted to fuck her that they couldn't. A reminder she belonged to one guy only.
A few times that week, she would meet Maddy's gaze in the hallway and feel her confidence drop and anxiety rise. She knew her former friend well enough to know their friendship break up wasn't over yet. Maddy could be spiteful, and Cassie had certainly burnt her.
Lunch time had definitely been the biggest change in her routine. She sat quietly by Nate's side and watched from afar as her friends sat at their usual table, an empty chair as a reminder of her deception. They would often look over her way in disgust. BB would flip her middle finger up to her, or make crude gestures. Maddy would mouth the word cunt her way quite a few times.
"Don't let them get to you, baby." Nate would whisper before draping his arm over her shoulders, laying his claim on her.
The hardest would be watching Lexi sitting with them, looking at her disapprovingly.
"Look at yourself." She would say in the bathrooms, in relation to Cassie's racy Thursday get up. "You're his little Barbie doll, he's dressing you like a hooker. It's pathetic."
But Cassie would ignore her sister's comments, her pleas for her to come back home, her warnings about Nate.
"Cassie, he's a psychopath." She would tell her, blocking her exit. "He doesn't love you."
"What do you know about love? You've never even kissed a guy."
"He's dangerous, he's going to ruin you."
"Did Fezco tell you that?" Cassie would laugh at the height of her sister judging her partner when her crush was the local drug dealer.
Her mother would call her most evenings and Cassie would hide in the bathroom to talk to her. She would ask her daughter to come home, to rethink her actions.
"This is the happiest I have ever been." Cassie would respond. "I'm never coming back home."
"How can you be happy? You're not talking to your sister, to your friends. Your life can't just be about Nate."
But they wouldn't understand what it meant to be that committed to your love that no one else mattered. That no one else was relevant to her.
Try as they may they could never make her see the faults in Nate Jacobs, or ever make her go back to her family home. Her home was where Nate was. Forever by his side.
There's nothing you could say to tear me away from my guy.
There's nothing you could do 'cause I'm stuck like glue to my guy.
