His face is a mask of stone as he stares into the flames of the lit pyre. Sam lays a hand on his older brother's shoulder but Dean just shrugs him off.
"Don't Sam." His voice is low and deadly serious. Sam steps back to where Castiel is standing at a respectful distance and begins speaking to him in a low tone. Dean stares into the flames until it feels like his eyeballs are roasting from the inside out.
"Come on Dean." Cas's voice is quiet. A hand grips his elbow. Dean allows himself to be led away from the burning pyre and his head is hanging low. His shoulders begin to shake and the sobs come. They wrack his body and leave him on his knees, covering his face. Cas wraps Dean in his arms and gently rocks him back and forth. Dean's body quivers as he sobs away that bottled up emotion into Cas's chest. You watch this exchange from far away peeking around a nearby tree.
"It had to be done." A voice says behind you making you jump. You glare daggers at the figure standing over you.
"Why did it have to be done though? You didn't ever explain to me the reason it needed to be done." The figure's shoulders move in what appears to be a shrug. You can't see their face as they have yet to step out of the shadows, but you know who it is. "And don't give me that cryptic bullshit about the answer being in the near future. You've made me come this far so just give it to me straight." A small chuckle sends shivers down your spine as the figure steps out of the light.
Lucifer towers over you the light in his eyes full of mischief and glee.
"I've always wanted to see a Winchester cry and I couldn't have them coming after you while we were busy." The smirk on his face is cruel and sadistic as he watches Dean sob.
"You're a bastard." You mutter under your breath and the light in his eyes dies slightly but the smirk is still there.
"Watch what you say about your new boss, human, or else you could find yourself in an uncomfortable situation." His hand comes down on your shoulder and squeezes and you see visions of Dean lying dead at your feet with the knife in your hand. The vision disappears and your chest aches with the breath that you've been holding. "Now, let's get to work." He turns and disappears into the shadows of the forest. You turn to follow him but take one last glance towards what remains of your burning funeral pyre. You stare right into Dean's eyes as his face turns from grief to confusion to elation and he pushes away from Cas running towards you. You catch yourself stepping forward out of the tree line before a hand wraps around your upper bicep and Lucifer drags you off into the shadows while Dean screams for you to come back.
"You'll never see him again." The dark whispers into your ear as it wraps you in its cold embrace and you sink into the velvety shadows.
