When Natasha had found out about the mission Fury wanted to send her on, she immediately declined, storming out the room as fast as she could. She couldn't even bare the thought being away from you for so long.
Yet, here she found herself, in the middle of nowhere, alone.
Thankfully, she was allowed to communicate with you on a phone provided by SHIELD that had been very carefully programmed so it would be almost impossible to hijack.
Nights were the hardest for both of you at first. Natasha longed to hold you in her arms, she missed the subtle scent of your hair and the way your body melted into hers.
The mission was tough and gruelling, the redhead was almost always exhausted.
She tried to keep up with her promised nightly facetimes but it was proving impossible after all the work she was doing during the day.
One night, you had started rambling about a boring meeting you'd just attended to Natasha, and she was accidentally lulled to sleep by your calm voice. When you noticed she had drifted off, you admired her peaceful features as you observed them.
The bear you got her before the mission was clutched tightly in her hand and it's head was rested under her chin.
You smiled, though your heart ached that you weren't with her.
A slight grin was present on her face and you assumed she was dreaming, of what, you didn't know, you just hoped it was something that was unlike what she was experiencing every day.
Natasha was a light sleeper, no matter the situation.
You thought that when you slept in the same bed as her, she would allow herself to relax properly but you being in her arms made her feel like she had a duty to protect you so she still refused to fully switch off.
It became normal for you both to fall asleep on the phone to each other after that, enjoying each other's presence even if it was virtual.
One night, Natasha wouldn't pick up her phone.
Your mind instantly thought of the worst.
She promised she wouldn't die on this mission.
The knock at your door scared you. Fury was on the other side with a pained look on his face.
"I'm sorry, Agent l/n," he patted your shoulder, giving you a pitiful smile.
You shut the door after he walked away, words couldn't be formed in your mouth. Stumbling backwards into your bed, sobs began to wrack your body. The room was spinning and flashes of red were obstructing your vision.
When you looked up, you saw what was causing the red in your eyes.
Natasha stood over you, desperately trying to calm you down.
Slowly, you regained your hearing and the same words were muttered to you over and over like a prayer.
"It's okay, baby. I'm here. We're safe."
You leaped into her arms, crying harder than before, relieved to be in the embrace of your favourite person once again. She held you as if you would disappear if she didn't, the pressure hurting you slightly, "Nat, I can't breathe," you croaked out.
"Sorry," she grinned sheepishly, loosening her grip on you, "I just missed you a lot."
"I missed you too," you smiled at her, a yawn from you breaking the comfortable silence in the room, making you both giggle.
She scooped you up into her arms, "I already showered before I got here. Let's get some sleep." You weren't one to say no to a nap when Natasha was with you so you sleepily nodded your head and tugged at her jumper.
The assassin chuckled, letting you wear her hoodie as you lay your head on her chest, finally feeling the warmth and security of being in the arms of Natasha again.
"Fury made me think you died," you huffed. "I know, I asked him to," she grinned. "It was not funny at all," you pouted. The redhead kissed you gently, watching your brows unfurrow as she eased your worries. "I'm sorry, honey," she brought her hand up to play with your hair.
Sure, the phone calls were nice, but nothing would beat the intimacy of actually getting to cuddle with the black widow.
