Chapter 31

Avery

I wake up and have no one by my side like I had expected; I walk to the kitchen and am greeted with a loud, “Surprise!” I smile and hug everyone that was there.

“Did you do this for me, Ty?” I asked.

“Of course.” He responded; as he handed me a present.

I opened it quickly to find a heart shaped necklace hidden in tissue paper. Ty puts it around my neck and kisses my cheek, “Thank you Ty.” He hugs me and walks me towards the cake and picks up a slice for me. I eat it slowly listening to the conversation over towards Zanara; she’s really pretty I thought to myself. I slowly walked over to her and Jelani but as I’m about to sit down Jelani leaves in a hurry.

“Is something wrong?” I asked.

Zanara looks at me surprised, “Oh no, Jelani just has to go get something.”

“He looked mad.” Zanara frowns, “I know that you told him that you have to start planning the wedding.”

She looks up at me, “You have great hearing.”

I smile, “Thank you.”

Damon sits down and puts his arm around Zanara, “You must be Avery.” He holds his hand out hinting that I should shake it but I stay where I am. He takes his hand away, “How is Ty treating you?” He asked jokingly.

“Very kindly; thank you for asking.” I replied.

Damon smiles as he whispers into Zanara’s ear, “There is something different about her.”

Zanara replies, “Yes.”

“But not in a good way.”

They had no idea I could hear everything they were saying but I continue to smile; as long as Ty loved me I was okay. Damon looked back at me, “Are you adjusting alright?”

I nod my head as Damon shifts uncomfortably. Zanara chimes in, “Avery what’s your birthday wish?”

“That Ty and I can be together.” I reply.

She smiles as Ty sits next to me and puts his arm around my shoulders. He frowns when he sees Damon, “Are you Damon?”

Damon smiles and nods, “And you must be Ty.”

Ty nods, “So you and Zanara?”

Damon cuts Ty off, “Are engaged and we are mates.” Zanara closes her eyes for a second and Damon smiles, “Would you excuse us for just a moment?”

Ty nods with a puzzled look on his face. “They are talking about planning the wedding.” I explain to him.

“How do you know that?”

“Just a hunch.”

Ty nods, he looks into the distance and begins to get up, “Come with me.” He grabs my hand and leads me down a hallway. Soon it became dark so I clutched my necklace for safety and protection. Ty opened a door and turned on the lights; the room was filled with instruments such as drums, guitar, cello, saxophone, trombone, flute, piano and my favorites the harp and violin. I sat down by the harp and began to play a simple song; I was rusty because Sedrik never allowed music because it created happiness for us. Ty sat next to me and watched as my fingers plucked off of each string. The song soon ended as I got up Ty grabbed my arm.

“Can you play another song?” He asked.

I smiled and nodded yes but instead of sitting back in front of the harp I began to play the violin; Ty began to tap his foot to the beat as the pace of the song quickened. Ty got up and started playing the drums to make the bass thump to the beat instead of Ty’s foot. My song ended and Ty stopped the drum he gave me his seductive smile as he got up and hugged me. We tried to play the unknown instruments in the room but we were unsuccessful and were really bad at playing them. There was a knock on the door just as I was sitting back down at the harp. Ty opened the door not all the way so no one could see that I was there with him. From what I heard Jelani was at the door I got up and pushed the door the rest of the way open.

Jelani smiled awkwardly, “Ty can I speak to you in private?”

Ty turned to me, “Why don’t you go back to the party maybe talk to your family?” He smiled as I hugged him and walked away I walked back into the kitchen to find Sky crying and my brothers’ wrestling Damon. While Zanara was talking with my mother I grabbed Sky and sat on the ground away from the ruckus as I tried to calm her down. I started to hum a song that my mom would hum to me when I was scared.

Sky shifts to get a better look at me, “Avewy.” She says with a smile. I was shocked her first word was Avery. A minute later I notice that the room was silent and my mom was staring at me in awe. She smiled as Sky said my name again, “Avewy, I wuv you.” Her lack of being able to pronounce my name correctly was so cute.

“I love you too Sky.” I reply.
