You sat down in your usual seat in your first class as you sighed. College was okay for you, you had a friend and you weren't particularly alone. Well, not until today.
Your friend wasn't in college today as she had been ill over the weekend, so you were spending the day alone. Needless to say, you were dreading it.
"Mr malik, you are late," the tutor stated, sighing yet again as Zayn walked in late. It wasn't a surprise I don't think he had been early once since we started college.
"Sorry," he shrugged, throwing his bag down where his usually seat was.
"Where's Louis?" The tutor asked, annoyed.
"He's not coming in today," Zayn said.
Zayn wasn't particularly popular, but a lot of girls liked him and even though he only really spent time with Louis, they were quite loud and were always late to lessons. They didn't seem to care much.
"Right, well your sitting next to Y/N today," the tutor told him firmly as he sighed and got up, picking up his bag and sitting next to me.
"Why do I have to sit here? I'm sure she'd rather be on her own," Zayn complained as our tutor seemed to get more annoyed by the minute.
"Yes you do, don't use that excuse Zayn," she seethed, wanting nothing more than to just start the lesson.
"It's not an excuse," Zayn said.
"Y/N, are you okay with Zayn sitting next to you for the rest of the day?" She asked, turning to you and raising her eyebrows, leaving you in an awkward situation.
"Yes it's fine," you muttered and she nodded, smiling at you.
"Good," she stated.
"Oh and Zayn?" She said.
"Yeah?"
"Don't back chat me," she said angrily as she began to start the lesson.
As she began to talk about what you were doing today, you weren't really paying much attention until you heard the words;
"I want you to all work in pairs to produce a poster this morning,"
You froze, so that's why she wanted us to sit together. Great. We don't even talk, this is going to be even more awkward than it already is. You thought.
"So what are we doing it about?" Zayn asked, not really seeming to care much at all.
"I don't know," you said honestly.
"You don't know? Weren't you listening?" He asked, sounding surprised.
"Not really, were you?" You asked.
"N-no not really, but I thought you always listened. You seem to be a really hard worker." He said, looking slightly puzzled.
"Is that what people think?" You asked.
You were a hard worker, you got on with your work and you put your best efforts into it, but that didn't mean you always listened. You got on with your work but that didn't mean you were the teachers pet, you didn't do extra work or ask for homework, you just got on with what you were asked to do.
"Well yeah, your quiet and you just seem to get on with your work," he answered.
You laughed slightly, "yeah I do but that doesn't mean I always listen, I'm not that much of a nerd." You told him.
"I didn't say you were. It's just...I liked you because of how much effort you put into things. Your not like everyone else in the sense that your not the type of person to not care at all, you just get on with what your told to do without complaining," he admitted, making you slightly shocked.
"You don't even know me, you've never talked to me before. You don't pay anyone any attention so how have you noticed all of that?" You asked.
"I guess your just different to other girls, they all seem to like me but you don't. You just seem...better than other people in my eyes." He said, blushing.
"Wait, what are you trying to say?" You asked again, confused as to why he would say this.
"Y/N, come on, your supposed to be clever. I like you, okay?" He said, looking you directly in your eyes.
"Is this a bet?" You asked, quietly.
"I'm not that clever either, I just get on with my work." You added as he looked at you, his eyes brightening.
"Of course this isn't a bet. I just pretended not to really care about you because otherwise you would've thought I was just saying that," he explained.
"I already do think that," you said as his expression dropped from hopeful, to a frown.
"What? You think I'm like everyone else?" He asked, hurt evident in his expression.
"I don't know, I don't really know you Zayn. You just don't seem to care much about anyone, so this is hard to take in." You said, feeling emotional.
You used to like Zayn, you still do. But you managed to push it to the back of your mind and not think about him, not thinking he would ever feel the same.
"I liked you before, but I forgot about you because you didn't seem to even notice me. I wasn't even sure you knew my name." You admitted, feeling nervous now that you had just told him that.
He looked at you, a hopeful look on his face again as he smiled at you.
"Well this is a big misunderstanding then." He laughed.
"I like you too Y/N, I always have since we started college and I've distanced myself from other girls because I'm not interested in them. I was planning on telling you after this year but I thought this would be a good opportunity," he said as you nodded.
"Will you be my girlfriend?" He asked as you hesitated.
"Okay, maybe not yet then?" He reasoned and you nodded.
"A date then?" He offered, desperation slightly coming through in his tone of voice.
"Yeah, that'd be nice." You smiled.
That date, turned out to be the first of many and when Louis came to college, he already knew about Zayns liking for you and he quickly accepted you and your friend into their friend group. College had become a much better place.
