After joining the VP, sleep got harder and harder to get. The days were long, and when you finally got the opportunity to get into bed at the end of the day, there was too much on your mind to even consider sleeping. Even when you tried, you would end up just laying awake, staring at the ceiling.
This was another one of those nights.
You sit up and rub at your eyes, sleep having eluded you once again. You were able to get at least twenty minutes, which was better than nothing. The clock shines a bright 4:38 AM as you look over at it and you groan. It's almost early enough to just wake up and start the day, but you know that isn't a good idea. Work is complicated enough, you don't need to make it harder by being more sleep-deprived than normal. You reach over for the bottle of water at your nightstand, only to find it empty. You could easily go to the kitchen and grab another one; a little walk would probably do you good anyway.
You head out into the dim hallway and make your way toward the kitchen. You don't bother turning the lights on when you get there, it would just ensure that sleep would be impossible.
The community kitchen is empty, as it should be this time of night, so you take a moment to appreciate the silence. In only a few hours you would be back to the loud drone of the plane's engine as you flew the teams wherever they needed to be. You also provided general arial support, dropping smoke for cover on the field wherever it was requested. You were good at what you did, one of the best pilots that the VP had to offer, but it took a lot out of you.
You walked over to the couch in the nearby community room, leaning back and closing your eyes for a moment. Sometimes all you needed to fall asleep was a change of scenery, so maybe you could get a bit more in out here, even if it was for only a few minutes.
You don't even begin to drift off before your shoulders tense back up at the sound of footsteps in the room. You open your eyes and you immediately jump at the figure that walks past you who also jumps as the two of you startle each other. There's a brief, small flash of light and you realize that it's Neon standing in front of you now. Her hair is down, devoid of the normal pigtails that she wears. She's wearing a pair of soft plaid pyjama pants and a loose black hoodie. She looks comfy like she just rolled out of bed.
"Shit," Neon says, breathlessly, "you scared the hell out of me." She laughs a little sheepishly.
"Sorry," You reply with a smile. "To be fair, you scared me first."
She scoffs, light-hearted, and sits down beside you. "What are you even doing out here?"
"Could ask you the same thing, Sparks."
You knew Neon pretty well. The two of you talked often when you had to fly her and whichever team she was assigned to somewhere. Banter between you was frequent and natural. Despite rarely ever being on the field, you felt like you knew Neon better than any of the other agents who fought alongside her on a daily basis and to be honest, you probably did.
"Touché," is the only response you get before the room grows quiet once more. The nice thing about your relationship is that even silence was comforting between the two of you. It wasn't often because both of you were pretty social people, but being able to sit without that tense awkwardness was something that you knew she had with very few others. The two of you remained quiet for a moment before she spoke up.
"You have trouble sleeping too?"
"Every night," you reply. You look over and notice just how tired she looks. You're sure that you don't look much different.
"It's just like there's too much going on in my head; going too fast, can never slow down, you know?"
You nod. You know perfectly well how hard it is to sleep when you can't stop thinking. It's what you were doing almost an hour ago now.
"Even a little bit of sleep is better than none though," you say, hoping it's at least a little bit comforting. You don't have any advice that you know Neon hasn't already heard before. She huffs and shrugs.
"Yeah, I guess that's fair."
There's a few more minutes of silence. You closed your eyes again a while ago, content to let your guard down with Neon around. It's still quiet when you suddenly feel a pressure on your shoulder.
When you glance down, you see Neon has leaned into your side and has seemingly fallen asleep. You smile, glad she's able to rest. You close your eyes again.
When you open them again, it's still dark in the room, but you can see the dim light outside of the skylight as the sun begins to slowly rise. You get confused for a minute about how you can see the skylight before you realize that you must have fallen asleep at some point too, and Neon had moved your head to rest in her lap. You move slightly and feel her hand in your hair where it had stayed after she fell asleep again. You look over at the clock on the wall. 5:23 AM. You had only been asleep for maybe twenty minutes, but you felt the most rested you had in weeks.
Neon stirs above you, and you feel her hand leave your hair as she wakes up and stretches her arms out. You try not to mourn the loss of contact too much.
"Guess it's almost time to get ready, isn't it?" Neon says, unconcerned that your head is still in her lap.
You sit up, thinking you're imagining the slight frown that Neon gives at the movement.
"Yeah, gotta get out there early today, Brimstone wanted me ready to fly for 6:45."
The two of you stand up, and for the first time, there's a hesitation before either of you says anything.
"You should let me know if you can't sleep again. That was... nice." Neon says. This time you know you aren't mistaking the pink that dusts her cheeks as she avoids looking you in the eyes.
"I will. You let me know if you can't sleep either. I'll see you out there today, Sparks." Neon smiles at you, big and bright.
"You know it, Smokes." She walks the opposite way to her room.
The day can't go by quick enough, but when it finally does, you find yourself looking forward to sleep for the first time in years.
This time, in Neon's arms, sleep comes easy and quickly for the both of you. It becomes a nightly routine. You switch rooms every so often, but what stays the same is the two of you holding each other like you've been doing it forever. It feels natural, and it feels safe. Her embrace feels like home.
