WARNINGS: Angst, Blood and Injury

----

The unease that spread throughout the Protocol when the dossiers were first released was unbearable. Every day without knowing where the blackmailer was, was another day lived fear that everyone's personal lives would be made public and the work that they had done would come crashing down around them.

They knew so much about you. Knew your real names, where you were from, and all of your loved ones. They seemed to know things about you that you had never admitted out loud. Everyone was at risk while this person was out there.

You were eager to help when you found out that you were being assigned on the mission to find them and bring them back to the VP.

When Cypher finally managed to pinpoint their location, there was both relief and anxiety that spread throughout the agents. If they failed to bring them in, it was highly likely that everything would be leaked very soon after. They had one chance to do this. And you were going to make sure that it succeeded. You had to. For you and for everyone else. You had to for Sabine. You saw the worry on her face, a permanent mark

--

The mission to find them went well at first. Everything seemed to be going according to plan. Everyone was playing their part, and it really did seem like all of you would be in and out with the blackmailer within the hour.

Until everything went wrong so quickly.

Neon and Sova stopped responding to their comms, going further into the warehouse despite Cypher's orders to wait.

Eventually, you and Chamber had to go in after them, once it sounded like things were going particularly wrong.

Inside, it was dark. There was an eerie silence that hung in the air and threatened to strangle you. The air was thick, and there was something about the entire building that put you on edge. It felt like there was someone watching you, and you could tell by the way Chamber's eyes darted around the room as he arrived at his rendezvous point beside you that he felt the same.

You try to look around for any hint of movement. To see if you could find Sova, Neon, or even the Blackmailer themselves.

A sudden noise behind you draws your attention, and your stomach drops when you turn back and see that Chamber is no longer with you. The room seems dimmer than it was at first, and the suffocating feeling is getting worse. There's a growling behind you. Something deep and animalistic that inspires a fear that bubbles out of your chest and clouds your judgement. You start running, taking off down the first hallway of boxes that you see. You can hear whatever it was that made the noise close behind you.

When your vision goes dark as you hear the growling overtake you, you expect pain. You fully expect whatever it was to be your end.

You hear a familiar voice calling out to you. She sounds pained and frantic, and you desperately look around for the voice you now recognize as Sabine. If you could take a second to think rationally, you would realize that this can't be real. Sabine isn't here with you. You know she's back at the base where you had left her. You had even kissed her goodbye before you left, promising that you would come back to her alive as you always did.
