Most people, when first meeting Omen, would not be so immediately enamoured in the same way that you were. A lot of people felt either fear or pity when they met the man of shadow and darkness. You felt neither of those things.
Omen, despite his outside unnerving look, was sweet and kind. He was thoughtful and protective. He also had such cute domestic hobbies for someone who was a genuine terror on the battlefield. He was able to terrorize enemies so easily, blinding and deafening those who stood in his way, hunting them down. But then he would come back to the base and knit a sweet little octopus like he just had the most normal and mundane day ever.
He seemed to appreciate your company.
When you first joined the VP, he was one of the first people that you had met, and he was pleasantly surprised when you treated him the exact same way that you seemed to treat everyone else. There were no reservations when you spoke to him, you were comfortable to be around. Eventually, it wasn't uncommon to see the two of you sitting and chatting in the commons area while Omen would knit.
It didn't take long for you to realize that you had a giant crush on the wraith. The problem was trying to communicate this to him. You didn't want to outright say it. You were too scared of ruining the nice moments that you already had with him. You didn't want to lose those nights where it would be just the two of you in comfortable silence. Nights like tonight.
You look over at him. The light from the flames in the fireplace giving off a warm glow and casting dancing shadows across his face. The only sound is the gentle popping of the wood and the soft clink of Omen's knitting needles.
That was it! You would knit him something. Maybe a scarf?
You had never really tried to knit anything before, but Omen made it look so simple that it surely couldn't be that difficult. You think about whether or not you should ask him. He could probably teach you easily enough, but if you did this on your own it would really be a surprise. You look over at the ball of yellow yarn he's working with. He had mentioned the colour being his favourite a while ago when you had asked.
"You look happy about something," Omen says, looking over at you. He doesn't need to watch his hands when he knits, you figure he's been doing it so long that he could easily knit an entire sweater without looking.
"Just thinking." You smile at him. He hums and returns to what you think is a little cat plushie.
--
Knitting is harder than you had thought. Each night that you would sit with Omen, you would try to really watch him while he worked on something. He worked a lot quicker than you could, but you did manage to get a basic understanding of it from a quick video and watching him.
By the end of the week, you had a scarf.
It wasn't perfect, by any means. It was wider in some spots when you accidentally added a stitch and thinner in some others where you dropped one. There were some spots where the stitches were a little looser or tighter than the others, but it was a scarf and you made it yourself. You folded it up and put it on the dresser, ready to give it to him tomorrow night.
--
Omen is waiting for you. He's a patient man, but he finds that he can't seem to wait to see you. He looks forward to each night that he spends with you by the fireplace. He remembers the first night that the two of you sat out here. You weren't like the others. You were never scared of him. Never looked at him like you were sorry that he was there.
"Good evening, Omen."
He looks up at you smiling so bright as you always do when you see him.
"I made you something," you say, hands still hiding it behind your back. "I know it's not perfect, but still." You sit down beside him and take the scarf from behind your back and hold it out to him. He looks stunned for a moment, before putting down the knitting that he had been working on and taking it from you, holding it so gently for something made of yarn.
"You made this?" He asks. You look away sheepishly.
"Yeah, like I said, it isn't perfect, but I just really wanted to make something for you."
He unfolds it and holds it up for a moment before putting it on. The yellow stands out against the purple and grey of his coat.
"I love it," he says, running his hands over the scarf that's now around his neck. "Thank you, y/n."
"You're welcome." Your cheeks are dusted a light pink. You wonder if now is a good time to tell him, but before you can say anything else he speaks up again.
"It means a lot to me," his voice is softer than you've heard it before. "Do you know why yellow is my favourite colour?" He's still staring at the scarf, holding a section of it in his hand.
"No, why?"
"It reminds me of you, y/n. You're so bright. You can light up a room with your presence alone. I cannot imagine why you spend so much time with someone like me, but I am grateful that you do."
You stare at him, blushing harder now, shocked by his admission.
"Omen..." You breathe out. "I spend time with you because I like you. I mean, really like you. I- wow this sounds so juvenile." You interrupt yourself and take a moment to breathe and laugh a little. "What I mean is that I think you're literally the sweetest person here. You mean a lot to me. I made that for you because I wanted to tell you that, and I figured that was the easiest way for me to show you I mean it."
There's a moment of silence, but it isn't uncomfortable. It's a silence that holds a mutual understanding between the two of you. Something that doesn't need to be said.
"Thank you," he looks over at you finally. "I have felt the same way for a while. I didn't want to scare you off." You smile at him.
"You couldn't scare me off, not after I watched you make seven yarn cats in one sitting just because Jett said they were cute and she wanted one." You laugh together.
You lean into his side and rest your head on his shoulder. He pulls you close and wraps his arm around you. The two of you stay like that for the rest of the evening. He picks his knitting needles back up and continues to knit with you at his side. He keeps the scarf on.
You don't see him often without it after that night. Even when he's on a mission, it's tucked under his coat and beneath his hood. He keeps it close because it's his constant reminder of you even when you're not around. It keeps him grounded. The two of you don't stop sitting in front of the fireplace most evenings to talk about your days. The only thing that changes, is that you're much closer to him now, often leaning against him or in his lap as he knits. The others don't mention it, but they notice the way that Omen affectionately holds the edge of the scarf when he's out on a mission or just around the base. They notice how close the two of you are, and they're secretly all very happy that the two of you finally realized your very obvious crushes on each other.
