----

Every time you left for a mission, you were more than aware that it could be your last. Dealing with the mirror agents was dangerous work. Even with the most skilled healers on your side, nothing would fix a single well-aimed shot.

Despite this understanding, you still tried to remain optimistic. You tried to always believe that you would make it back okay. You had your teammates with you, and all of you would protect each other.

Chamber was always particularly affectionate before either of you would leave. He had spent his time in the military, and he had more than enough combat experience elsewhere as well to know that any fight could end up his last. He hated when you were assigned somewhere without him. At least when the two of you were together he could protect you. When you were out on a mission with anyone else, or even alone sometimes, he wouldn't sleep until you returned. If he did, it was plagued with dreams of him losing you. Something he never wanted to experience.

He wraps his arms tight around you and presses a kiss to the top of your head.

"Be careful, mon cœur," he says softly into your hair.

"I always am. You be careful too, Vincent. I love you." You feel how his arms tighten a little at your words.

"I love you too, mon amour, so much." He leans back and raises a hand to cup your cheek as he kisses you.

The two of you head out to the ship that will take you to your mission. Most of the others are already there waiting. Chamber is usually apprehensive when it comes to missions with you, but today especially he can't seem to shake the nervousness that sits in the pit of his stomach.

--

The point he's watching is silent. He keeps waiting for someone to give a callout on the comms, but it seems like there's no sign of the mirror agents yet.

"B point, some activity here," Killjoy says through the earpiece. He gets ready to teleport over to the rendezvous point he had set up nearby before your voice speaks up as well.

"Their Yoru is in the rift somewhere nearby on C. I think I can hear more on their wa-" the sound of a loud gunshot rings out and interrupts you, closely followed by a cry of pain before the line goes silent. Brimstone is shouting something, but Chamber isn't listening. He can feel his heart in his throat as he starts running.

"I'm hit, they're all here." Your voice sounds strained and he hears you cough at the end of your sentence. "I've lost sight of their Yoru again, watch your backs."

"We're on our way, fall back!"

Any response you're about to give is cut short as you feel another shot rip through your stomach. You aren't sure where it came from, and your head starts spinning so you can't make an attempt to look. Everything is blurry, and the pain that's spreading through your abdomen has you feeling nauseous. You feel your back hit the wall behind you and your knees buckle as you slide down to the ground. You cough again, and your mouth fills with the sharp metallic tang of blood. All you can do is hope that someone will find you quickly enough. You hear Chamber's voice for a moment, and you realize that this might be the last time that you do.
