Sabine slowly awakes, the sun beginning to shine through the large window and casting the room in warm gold. She can smell breakfast cooking in the kitchen and smiles.
Moments later, you're bringing in a tray of food for her. An omelette and a perfectly brewed coffee. It's one of your many talents: learning how to brew her coffee for her just how she likes it, which is a feat in itself because she is very particular about it. She doesn't usually eat breakfast, far too busy to have the time to make anything, but you had specifically requested that Brimstone refrain from calling her in early, giving her a little bit more time to spend with you. You have the day off so you have time to prepare everything.
"Happy anniversary, love," you say as you set the tray down in front of her and she leans up to kiss you.
"Happy anniversary," she replies.
You're back in the kitchen again when Sabine walks in and wraps her arms around you from behind, resting her chin on your shoulder. You can still feel how her hair is slightly damp from her shower.
"What are you doing?" She asks, peering over at the ingredients you have laid out on the counter in front of you.
"A surprise. You'll see when you get home."
She hums and presses a kiss to your cheek.
"Hmm, I look forward to it. We still have our dinner plans, yes?"
"Of course," you reply, turning around to face her and kiss her properly this time. "I'll see you later, I love you."
"I love you too," she answers, kissing you once more before she turns to leave.
While she's gone, you finish baking the cake. Sabine isn't super fond of things that are overly sweet, so you've decided to make one of her favourites which is a simple cake flavoured with cinnamon and pumpkin. You make a different cake flavour for her each year, each one intricately decorated with chocolates and icing.
Once it's done, you put it away in the fridge and start getting ready for the evening. It doesn't matter how long you and Sabine have been married, each anniversary was just as special as the last to you.
Sabine walks into her office and isn't surprised at all when she sees the small bouquet of roses that awaits her on her desk. You only get her a few because of her allergies, but even then, roses are usually fine as they don't have as much pollen. She looks at the small card that sits beside it: "Dear, Sabine, My love, Each year with you is just as precious as the last, and I look forward to many more years together. With love and adoration, yours truly, y/n."
She tries to drop her smile when she has to leave her office again to talk to Brimstone, but she can't shake the thoughts of you that fill her with a light impossible to smother.
The day can't go by quick enough for either of you. But finally, Sabine is back home. The two of you leave for the restaurant that you had booked several weeks ago in advance. A place that the two of you have gone to for many years.
As the two of you drive home, Sabine's hand doesn't leave yours. There isn't much that you talk about, comfortable to sit in the silence of each other's presence for a while.
At home, the two of you try the cake that you made earlier. And the rest of the night is spent on the couch together, watching some movie that the two of you agreed on in your pyjamas together. You aren't paying too much attention, too distracted by the way the light of the TV casts soft light on Sabine's smiling face. You get these moments a lot, even when the two of you are incredibly busy with the VP, but it was nice to really sit back and relax together.
"I almost forgot," you say, reaching behind a nearby pillow where you hid a small box wrapped in a neat ribbon. "I got you this."
"Oh, you really didn't have to," Sabine starts to object, but takes the box that you hand to her anyway. She pulls at the ribbon and opens the lid of the box to reveal a beautiful emerald stone pendant on a silver chain. It's simple, the way she likes her jewellery, but stunning all the same. "This is beautiful, thank you so much, y/n." She kisses you before you reach for the necklace, clasping it around her neck for her. It's vibrant and matches her bright green eyes.
"I also got something for you," she says, pulling out a box of similar size. The two of you are really bad at the whole 'we don't need to buy each other a gift this year' thing. You can't help it, you just saw the necklace and it was so pretty and reminded you of her.
You open the box that Sabine hands to you and gasp softly as you a beautiful silver bracelet that has a pattern of light blue stones and engravings set in the shape of waves across the metal.
"Thank you, Sabine, it's wonderful."
The two of you end up falling asleep on the couch together, wrapped in each other's arms. Tomorrow, neither of you had to do anything, so you could sleep in. There was nothing either of you had to worry about. The two of you slept soundly as the soft light of the moon bathed the room in calm silver light.
