When you joined the VP and Jett was assigned by Brimstone to watch over you for the first few weeks, she wasn't happy about it. She didn't like the idea of having to hold herself back just to make sure you didn't get hurt. She wasn't a babysitter.
She quickly realized, however, that you were more than capable of holding your own in a fight. You impressed her, even, on more than one occasion.
It also turned out that you were actually pretty nice. The more time she spent with you, the more often she found herself missing you when you weren't around. Every chance she got, she was making some excuse about why she had to be around you. She mentioned how well she worked with you to Brimstone once in an attempt to get the two of you assigned on missions together more. She just liked being around you, that's all.
--
Phoenix laughs to himself as she stares over at you. She's quick to turn to him with a frown.
"What's so funny?"
"Nothin'. But just curious, when do you plan to actually ask them out instead of fawning over them every second?" Phoenix smiles as Jett blushes, shaking her head.
"What are you talking about? I don't 'fawn' over them."
"Oh yes you do," he laughs louder this time, and Jett can't help but look over at you again to make sure you can't hear him. "You're always together, and when you aren't you're going on and on about them. By all means, though, keep up the tough-girl act."
"Shut up," Jett says, voice lacking any venom. But she thinks about it for a moment.
The more she sits there, the more she realizes that Phoenix is right. When you aren't together, she finds herself always looking forward to the next time she can see you. She could easily go on and on about you if prompted. And maybe she's thought about how nice it would be to kiss you once or twice, but that's totally... fuck, she is down bad.
She puts her face in her hands and groans. Phoenix smiles and rests a hand on her shoulder.
"What do I even say?" Her voice is muffled by her hands.
"Just tell them."
"It's not that easy," Jett protests.
"I assure you it is. What's the worst that could happen?" He means well when he says it. Jett stares at him incredulously.
"Do you really want me to list them all?"
"Wow, they've really got you, huh? You've always been one for rushing in without a care," Phoenix jokes, trying to ease some of the worry that sits heavy in her expression.
"Fighting is different. I really don't want to mess this up."
"Jett, I promise you it'll be fine. Just tell 'em how you feel." Phoenix, with no more advice to offer, gets up from the couch. "I mean, if you're too scared, I could always talk to them," he offers, and she reacts exactly how he expects her to.
"No! No, don't. I'll do it," Jett frantically assures him.
"Alright, perfect. Good luck, Jett."
He leaves Jett alone on the couch. She groans again and drags a hand across her face.
This was going to be a stressful week.
--
The week consists of Jett struggling to find the right time to say something. She's been trying to bring it up naturally, but every time she's about to say something she chickens out. So instead, she's just been showering you with compliments every chance she gets. She had even taken the time to bake, a hobby that she hadn't been able to do in so long, just to give you the fresh sweets.
But after everything she's done, she just can't do it.
It all comes to a head when she runs into you in the commons area late one night.
--
You're standing in the dimly lit kitchen, staring at the mug of tea you had finished making. It's been a long week, and you're looking forward to finally getting to relax. You appreciate the silence that comes with this time of night.
You jump slightly as you hear someone walk into the kitchen on your right. When you turn to look at them, your face breaks into a smile as Jett walks in. You hadn't had the chance to talk to her much today, and you had found yourself missing her far more than you wanted to admit.
You had realized your feelings a little while ago, but you just couldn't find the words to tell her how you feel.
"Hey," Jett greets as she walks past you to open the cupboard and reach for a cup.
"Hey," you echo. For the first time, an awkward silence falls between the two of you. Fuck it. You might as well say something now.
"Can we talk-" You start.
"I wanted to ask you something-" Jett begins at the same time.
The two of you look at each other, cheeks dusted pink, before you both start laughing.
"You go first," you say with a smile. Jett takes a deep breath before she speaks again.
"Okay. I just-," she takes another breath. "This shouldn't be this hard to do." She laughs quietly. "Okay. I wanted to say that you're really cool. The past few months have been really great getting to know you and work with you and hang out with you. Everything about you is just amazing. But I think I might actually really like you. I mean like you as in I can't seem to get you out of my head." Jett finally turns to look at you as you stare at her stunned.
"If you don't feel the same way, nothing has to change between us. I just needed to get it off my chest." Jett does her best to not look as scared as she feels but the longer the silence grows between you the more nervous she gets.
"Jett, I was going to say the same thing." The look on your face makes her heart swell. "I mean not the exact same thing, but the general idea. I've been thinking about how I could tell you for a while now."
"We both have the weekend off now. Can I take you out tomorrow?" Jett asks, now completely lacking the nerves she had earlier.
"I would love that," you answer.
--
Jett sits beside Phoenix as he listens to her recount how her confession, or rather both of your confessions, went. He congratulates her with a smile; partly because he's happy to hear that the two of you finally got together, but also because he can officially tell Yoru that he lost the bet and he owes Phoenix.
