Chapter 20
March 19th, 1986
"Steve!" I smile.
"Yeah?!" He matches my energy.
"I just bought a new poster!" I jump up and down.
"Wait, really?! What kind?"
"The Police, duh, one of my favorite bands. You should know this by now, Steve."
"Right. I should. Shouldn't you be off break in like," Steve looks down at his watch, "five minutes."
"Yeah, but I'm waiting to see Robin. Since Robin is my best friend, I think I should see her," I lightly push Steve.
Robin is now a senior in high school and she has been talking about this girl that she likes. I remember when she told me about her being lesbian. I was a little taken back, but I do support her. Now, she told me about how she used to have a crush on me and how she had one on Tammy Thompson for little while. She reassured me that quote "even if you are a babe, I don't like you like that anymore."
I do get upset when I have something big to say and I go to tell Jonathan, but he's not there. Even if I have to use a long distance call to talk to Jonathan I do write letters to El and Will. They're like my little siblings and I miss them. Will always tells me about how he's gotten more into painting. El has been telling me about this one bitch named Angela.
I tell El to beat her ass, but I doubt she actually does. Since she told me her that powers are gone she doesn't know how to defend herself otherwise.
"Am I not your best friend?" Steve puts a hand on his heart acting like he's hurt by what I just said.
"No, you are, but Robin is just better." I give Steve a smug smile and turn to the door where Robin is walking through. "Robin."
"Y/n," she gives me a smile.
"I have been waiting to say "hi" to you before I go back to work." I walk up to her to give her a hug.
"How special I am," she hugs me back.
We both let go and I start walking out the door, "bye."
"Bye," the two wave. I walk next door to the arcade to see my coworker at the counter.
"Hey Kev," I get behind the counter and grab my hat. "Any new customers?"
"Nah, just some high schoolers and middle schoolers from Hawkins school," Kevin says with a blank face while he looks at the newspaper.
"What are you looking at?" I walk over and look over his shoulder.
"Just Hawkins paper. There's nothing new. Ever since that mall fire the paper has been boring."
"Wow," I stare at him blankly. "Anyways, do you need me to clock in, or can I just chill in the back?"
"Actually, one of the bowling alleys need some working on. If you can call a repair man and have him take a look that would be nice."
"You got it," I sigh and walk to the phone.

Works over and I throw on my coat. Steve and Robin already got done with work about two hours ago. It's 11pm and I am exhausted. I honestly could have a way better job, but I have no idea what I want to do. As I'm in college I don't have a need to have the best job.
I get in my car and blast 'Africa' by TOTO. I arrive home, park my car, walk to my door, and unlock it. I walk up stairs and as soon as I flop on my bed my phone rings. I groan and angrily pick it up, "what?"
"Wow, geez, no need be cranky," Steve says from the phone.
"I'm tired, Harrington."
"Yeah, but we haven't done our thing tonight."
"Right, When we talk on the phone before one of us fall asleep."
"Exactly."
"So, Robins playing at Lucas' game on Friday."
"Yeah, you going?" Steve asks.
"Yeah, I'm taking Dustin and you're taking Robin."
"That's right. You think we might see some people from high school?"
"Probably, I'll have to say hi to Eddie. We used to play D&D together when he was a Freshman and a Sophomore."
"I keep forgetting you're a nerd."
"Shut up, Harrington," I laugh. "You have any lower classmen friends that you're gonna say 'hi' to?"
"Nope, all my friends were in the same grade as me."
"Dude, I am so excited to say hi to him and everyone that's still in the club. You know, Dustin told me that him, Mike, and Lucas are in his club. Dustin keeps telling me how cool it is that I know Eddie."
"Eddie seems like a nerd."
"Um, Steve, 'cause he is. I still have to educate you on some things though."
"Like what?"
"Like sorry man, you....are....hopeless."
"Okay, that's mean."
"Is it though? It's true. I think I need to teach you how to play some D&D."
"No, you don't. I will never play that shit."
"Mhm....we'll see." I smirk. "You know, I can't believe I've never been to their games."
"I can't believe that either. At least it's a day your free."
"Yeah, I'm all caught up in school, and I'm not working that day. I would say I made out."
"We should make out."
"Steve, we're not even in the same room right now."
"True."
We just stay in our comfortable silence on the phone. My eyes get heavy and I can hear Steve's light breathing from the phone. "You know, I think that we'll never fully close that gate," I hear Steve say.
"What makes you think that?" I furrow my eyebrows.
"They always keep coming back, every year. This would be the fourth time if it happens this year."
"Yeah, but we've beat it every year."
"Yeah, 'cause we're badasses," I hear Steve say with so much exaggeration.
I laugh, "those kids really trust us, huh?"
"Yeah. They do. I really care about them."
"I do too. I've been writing to El and Will since they moved. I miss those two."
"Eh, they were alright," Steve jokes.
"I still can't believe you took my own advice to ask me out," I laugh.
"Hey, Dustin told me it's the best way to find out how you like being asked out."
"Well, Dustin was right. It was cute."
"Cute?"
"Yes, cute. It was cute Steve."
"Hey, I am not cute. I am not cute."
I just laugh. Steve can act tough all he wants, but he's really just a little puppy dog.
