Chapter 32

We followed the compass and it took us to Lovers Lake. "There's a gate in Lovers Lake?" Max asks mostly to herself.

"Whenever the Demogorgon attacked, it always left an opening," Nancy says. "Maybe Vecna's the same way."

"Yeah, only one way to find out," Steve says. My eyes drift to a tarp covering a boat. I walk over to it with everyone following me as I take it off. Steve helps me push it in place for us to get on the boat.

Robin gets in first and steps on the boat. Then Eddie gets on and helps me on the boat. Nancy follows after me as I help her in.

Dustin attempts to get on but Eddie stops him, "hey you trying to sink us? This thing holds four people tops, okay?"

"It's safer this way, Dustin. You guys stay here with Max. Keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary," I say.

"You keep an eye out," Dustin snaps. "It's my goddamn theory, Y/n."

"You heard N/n," Robin defends.

"Who put her in charge?" Dustin whines.

"I did," Robin smiles.

"Compass please," I smile sweetly at Dustin. Dustin gives it to me reluctantly.

"Here," Steve chucks his backpack at Dustin and jumps in the boat.

As Robin and Eddie paddle us Dustin yells, "you said four!"

"Sorry," I hear Steve whisper to Dustin.

"Bedtime at nine Kids!" I yell. "I miss you already!"

I look at the compass as they paddle further into the lake. We get to a curtain spot and the compass starts going crazy. "Woah, woah, woah, slow down. Slow down guys."

They stop paddling and I lean over to the side of the boat and show the others Dustin's compass. The needle was spinning in circles crazy fast.

"Whoa," Steve gasps.

Robin picks up the walkie to talk to Dustin. Steve starts to undress.

"Steve, what are you doing?" Nancy asks.

"Somebody's gotta go down and check this thing out. Unless one of you four can top being Hawkins High swim co-captain, and a certified lifeguard for three years, then.."

"I can," I smirk.

"Nope, except you, it's gotta be me," Steve tells me. My face falls into an annoyed face and I scoff.

"But—,"

"It's gotta be me. Not complaints, 'aight?" Steve says, cutting me off while standing up.

"Not complaining. I do not wanna go down there," Eddie says.

Steve takes off his shirt and Nancy stares at him. Even Eddie, and Robin stare. I look back at where the kids are and I can see Max staring too. My jaw drops in disbelief.

"Dustin's right, Steve. You needa' tame that jungle," I joke.

"Shut up," he playfully shakes his head.

Eddie hands him a flashlight with a bag protecting it, "Good luck."

"Thanks," Steve says.

"Be safe, Steve," I smile at him worryingly.

"I will," Steve looks at me and back at the pitch black water. He dives in and water splashes us in the face.

I groan and wipe the water off my face. Then a thought pops in my mind and I scoot next to Robin, "you know, since the gate is in the water it's basically a watergate." I reference from the scandal back from the 70's.

Robin looks at me, "oh my God! You're right."

We both smile and laugh as we wait for Steve. Robin would crack me and Eddie some jokes as Nancy would stare confused at us.

Eventually Steve breaks through the water and splashes us again. We all yell in shock.

"I found it."

"You found it?" I smile in relief.

"I found it. Yeah. Yea found it. Shits more a snack size gate then a normal gate, but still, it's pretty damn big."

I reach my hand out to help Steve as he clasps his hand in mine. He then gets pulled under the water along with me. I make my grip on him tighter as to not lose him. I try to resist and pull him the opposite way but the same thing grips onto me.

We both get tugged down into the gate and get pulled the same direction but far apart. "Steve!" I yell.

"Y/n!" He yells back. I then get hit by something and Everything goes blank for a moment.

My eye flutter open to see Steve choking and eaten alive. I look behind me to see a paddle and I snatch it and stand up. I impale the demobats head.

"Hello there," I smirk at him. I finally found a moment to say that line. I smack two of those bat right in the head without looking. Then just in time the rest of the gang shows up to help us.

Everyone starts going crazy on the Demobats. Steve bites the Demobat and crawls while holding the tail of one of the bats and start swinging it on the ground back and forth and rips it inhalf.

He spits out blood from his and looks at me. "Steve," I rush to his aid. "Oh my God, are you okay?" I put my hand on his shoulder.

"They only took about a pound of flesh. I'll be okay," he jokes.

"Uh- do you think these bats have like rabies?" Robin asks.

"What?" I ask.

"It's just that rabies are, like,y number one greatest fear, and I think we should get you to a doctor really soon  because once symptoms set in, it's too late. You're already dead."

We just stare at her. We then hear more bat coming and we turn to look to only see a few.

"There's not that many. We can take them," Steve says. "Right?"

We look up to see a heard flying towards us.

"You we're saying?" Robin snarkily asks.

"Run, run, run," I tap on all of them and run toward the woods.
