Chapter 37
We stealthily get out of Eddie's trailer and follow hin as we make our way to his neighbors RV. Eddie feels around the window and opens it and crawls through.
Dustin jumps in next and then me. I follow Eddie in the front while crouching so the owners won't see us. Eddie gets out his hot wiring equipment.
Steve slowly walks over to us, "where'd you learn how to do this?"
"Well, when the other dads were teaching their kids how to fish or play ball, my old man was teaching me how to hot-wire. Now I swore too myself I wouldn't wind up like he did, but now I'm wanted for murder."
Eddie starts to rub the wires together, "and soon grand theft auto. So, uh, I'm really living up to that Munson name"
Robin comes up behind Steve, "uh, Eddie, I'm not sure I love the idea of you driving."
"Oh, I'm just starting this sucker," Eddie responds. "Harringtons got her. Don't ya big boy," Eddie smiles at Steve. I snort out a laugh, and Eddie starts the RV.
"Hey! Open this door!" The owner yells at us.
"Shit, shit, shit, go," Steve tells Robin and Eddie. Steve hops in the driver seat while I'm in the passenger. "It's just a car. Everybody hang on to something!" He warns
"Drive Steve, drive!" Dustin yells and stumbles to hold on to something. Steve steps on the gas and we drive off onto the road.
"That was insane," I laugh.
"Yeah, it was," Steve agrees with a smile. I look out the window as Steve turns on the radio. There was trees and flowers as we pass by. They're were sunflowers and daisies along with poppy's.
The kids were in the back talking and laughing. It was calming. Whenever I would glance at Steve I would catch him looking at me and I would quickly look away.
It felt like when we both just had crushes on each other. Not dating. It felt like when we were both clueless. Dumb little kids. Fresh out of high school. I can't believe it's been a year since he asked me out.
It was so cute. I loved seeing him express his feelings 'cause he never does.
"Steve turn off the country music," I groan.
"Why?" He laughs.
"'Cause I hate it. Turn on like, I don't know a good radio station."
"Okay, okay, fine," he laughs and reaches to turn the station.
"You know, I wish things could just be like this sometimes," I lean my head back on the headrest.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, like, just all of us hanging out. You know, without all of this Upside Down shit going on. It feel like we're all going on a road trip to the beach or something."
"Yeah, me too," Steve nods while keeping his eyes on the road. "Y/n."
"Hm?"
"You know I love you, right?" He looks at me.
"What, really? I never knew that?" I smile sarcastically.
"You are the best thing that has came into my life. God, I love you," Steve laughs.
"Stop, Steve," I blush and look back out the window.
"Hey, it's true," he defends. "We have to go roller skating some time after all of this, you know."
"Oh I will totally beat your ass at roller skating," I tell him.
"No, you won't. Steve Harrington is the best roller skater in this whole town."
"Did you just talk to yourself in third person?" I laugh.
"Maybe."
I stare at him with the biggest smile on my face. He is the dorkiest boy ever.
"You have to let me do your hair," I insist.
"No. No one touches my hair," he shakes his head.
"Oh come on," I groan. "I can put your hair in a mini French braid. Ou, or even pigtails," I get excited.
He looks at me and turns his head back at the road while shaking his head, "fine, but after I shower. I cant have any of my signature Harrington gel in," he winks.
"Oh whatever," I giggle. "You are such a dork."
"Am not," he laughs.
"Are too."
"Am not"
"Are too."
We bicker for a while until I just give up. I know for a fact Steve could do this forever. We're both stubborn, but he beats me on that one.
He can always last longer then me. It's always a contest with him. That man always has to win.
"You know what's silly?" Steve asks not looking away from the road.
"Hm?"
"I always had this dream that we'd have this really...really big family. I'm talking, like, uh, a full brood of Harringtons. Like, five, six kids."
"Six?" I ask in disbelief.
"Yeah. Six little nuggets. Three girls, three boys, and...and every summer, I figured all of us Harringtons, we'd pack into something like this and....see the country."
I just look at Steve as he tells me his future dream. I can picture it, but not the six kids. Maybe two, but not six.
"You know, the Rockies, Grand Canyon, maybe Yellowstone. End up in some beachside town in California. Spend a week parked in the sand. Learn how to surf or something."
"That actually sounds....nice," I look at Steve.
"Yeah?" He turns to me.
"Well, except for the six kid part. Oh my God, that's sounds like a total abomination," I laugh.
"If only we had some practice," he ushers to the kids in the back of the RV.
"Oh my God," I laugh. "Let me tell you something. Those kids can get in my nerves, but I love 'em." I shake my head while smiling.
"Tell me about it." Steve laughs, "I think we have handle six. I mean we've handled six before."
"Maybe two, 'big boy'," I mimic what Eddie said.
Steve catches on and laughs. "What's your dream?"
"Well, I figured once we defeat Vecna and just the Upside Down in general. We could settle down here in Indiana, and live in my parents house while I do college."
"Since you know, their house is payed off so it wouldn't be as expensive and a good way to start off. I figured we would travel and soon maybe have kids. One boy, one girl, and just like you said, get something like this and travel with them. I think it would be nice."
"You would want to stay here?" Steve asks.
"Just for a little while. You know, to get started in life. Then, after that, we could live our best life, who know maybe even get married."
"That also sounds nice," Steve says warmly.
"You think this will work?" I blurt.
Steve takes a moment to respond, "yeah, I think we'll all make it out alive."
"I hope so....I don't know what I would do if any of you died," I look at my hands and fidget with them.
"Hey, nothing will happen to any of us."
"I hope so," I look up and over at Steve.
