Chapter 28

"Where to?" I ask Max while looking thought my rear view mirror.

"My house."

"You got it, boss," I step on the gas just a little and we start cruising towards the Mayfield's house. I rest my foot on the seat as my other is on the gas. One of my hands on the wheel and the other resting in my thigh.

I can feel Steve's eyes glance at me and back on the road. I turn on the radio and I can feel Steve intertwine his hands with mine and pull them closer to him.

Steve starts playing with the palm of my hand as I feel my stomach flipping with glee. We arrive at her house and I park right in the front.

"Take your time Max. We'll be here," I smile sweetly at her.

"No, don't listen to her, Mayfield. You better be fast," Steve warns her.

"Twenty seconds," she groaned and runs over to her house.

"You're so mean," I furrow my eyebrows.

"What? No, I am just mad because you stole my car keys."

"Okay, but you were being way too strict. You know, you sound like a mom," I roll my eyes.

"Hey, I am a good one, though," Steve gets defensive.

"Maybe, but I'm a better dad," I give him a playful look.

"Are you guys calling us your children?" Dustin asks.

"No."

"Yes."

Steve looks at me with furrowed eyebrows and wide eyes, "yes?"

"Yes, and so far I have a favorite."

"Who?" Lucas and Dusting ask.

"I'm not saying anything," I smile smugly.

The car goes silent until Steve says something, "that things got batteries in it, right?"

Dustin looks at him like he's dumb, "I'm not even answering that question."

Steve still looks back at him.

"Yes, it has batteries."

"Yeah, I got it," Steve says.

"I'm still curious on who's your favorite," Lucas says.

"Is it El?" Dustin asks. "I mean she would always ask you for advice and you guys always bonded. I mean you even write letters and call her."

"I do the same with Will," I argue.

"I think it's Dustin," Lucas says.

"Really?!" Dustin lights up.

I chuckle, "you guys, I won't tell, and that's final. Besides where's Max? It's been a while." I get out the car and so does everyone. I could see her running over to us.

"Whoa, is everything alright, Max?" I ask concerned.

"I'm fine. Just drive, please," she gets in the car. We all get in as well and I start the car and drive off.

-

As I've been driving Max has been telling me where to turn. Steve's been playing with my hand this whole time we've been driving and it's been relaxing.

His touch makes me feel safe and secure. It makes me feel happy from what's been going on in my life. I've been in contact with some family and they have been planning a funeral. I told them all of my parents wishes and what they want us to do with them when they die.

We get to the cemetery where some of my family members have been buried. My little brother actually was buried here. I do miss him. I smile at the thought of him until Max tells me to turn.

"Here? Are you sure?" Dustin looks at make with a worried face as I don't question her and turn down the cemetery. I park the car and Max gets out the car. Lucas unbuckles his seatbelt and follows after her.

"I think they both still have feelings for each other," I smile. "Max is just scared."

We see Max walk away from Lucas and he walks back to the car. I look at the letter Max had wrote me. I wonder what it says. Max wrote me a letter. It made me feel happy that she had something to say about me.

Steve looks at me looks at the envelope with my name on it, "you wonder what she wrote, huh?"

"Yeah," I look at him. Dustin and Lucas were both outside leaning on the car. I look back out the window to see Max kneeling by Billy's grave reading her letter.

I look at her with a sad smile when Steve starts getting giddy.

"Alright it's been long enough," Steve gets out the car. I get out the car to follow after him.

"Steve, just give her some time," Lucas tells him.

"I have, alright Sinclair ?" Steve walks off. "I'm callin' it."

"Steve," I try. I rush after him.

"Max! Time to giddy up, alright?" Steve stops in his footsteps. "Max."

Steve kneels down, "Max."

"Steve, let her be-" I stop in my tracks to see her eyes white. "Max!" I kneel down in front of her.

"Max wake up!" Steve claps his hands In front of her.

I start shaking her shoulders with my hands, "Max!" I yell.

"Guys?!" Steve yells for Lucas and Dustin. They come running towards us as Steve and I both try bringing her back to reality.

The also fall on either side of Max and were all screaming for her to wake up. Steve grabs Dustin by the shirt, "call Nancy and Robin! Go get 'em! Call Nancy and Robin! Go!"

Dustin falls off the platform and runs towards the car. Us three keep shaking Max and talking her name.

"Max! Wake up!" I shout.

"Max!" Steve and Lucas yell.

Dustin comes running back yelling, "guys!" He falls on his knees and drops a bunch of cassette tapes.

"What is this?" Lucas asks.

"What's her favorite song?" Dustin yells.

"Why?!"

"Robin says if she listens- it's too much to explain right now. What's her favorite song?!"

"Is it this one?" I grab a random tape.

"No."

I grab another one.

"No."

Dustin and Steve start doing what I'm doing and showing him random cassette tapes.

"No!"

"No!"

"No!"

Until we get to the right one, "this one!" Lucas yells. It was 'Running Up That Hill' by Kate Bush.

Dustin grabs it and puts the tape into the cassette and into Max. "Now!" I yell. Dustin presses play.

"Max! Wake up!" We continue to plead.

Max then floats into the air just like how my parents were. "What the hell! Max!" I shout.

We all get up and start shouts at her floating body. She finally falls to the ground panting. Lucas hugs her as she grabs his arms. Her face was terrified.

"I thought we lost you," Lucas's voice breaks.

"I'm-I'm still here," she pants.

We just kneel down around her as Lucas hugs her.
