Chapter 22
"Over here," Dustin waves at me from the side gate.
I rush over to Mike and Dustin with my binder of all my old D&D shit from high school. We start walking down the hall towards where Hellfire meets.
We walk in and I see Gareth, Jeff, and Eddie. "Y/n?!" They all gasp. They all rush over to me and basically doggy pile on me.
"It's good to see you," Eddie brushes off imaginary dust off of my sweater.
"You too, Munson," I smile. "I see you're the leader now."
"Yep, looks like I took your place," Eddie chuckles.
"Wait, you never told me you were the club leader of Hellfire," Dustin gasps.
"Hell yeah she was," Eddie points at me. "This girl right here is the best D&D player I have ever met."
"Let's not go that far," I get embarrassed.
"Mhm," Eddie stares at me.
We just stand there until Dustin breaks the silence, "so, are we gonna get this show on the road?"
"Let's do this!" We all cheer.
We all gather around the table as Eddie narrates, "the hooded cultists chant, "hail lord Vecna. Hail lord Vecna." They turn to you, and remove their hoods. You recognize most of them from Makbar, but there is one you do not recognize. His skin shriveled, desiccated, and something else. He is not only missing his left arm, but his left eye!" Eddie covers his left eye.
We all shout from confusion and annoyance, with a side of anger, "Vecna's dead."
"He was killed by Kas," Mike shouts.
"So it was thought, my friends. So it was thought," Eddie stands up. "But Vecna lives!" He places Vecna on his throne.
We all stare shocked. "You are scared. You're tired. You are injured. Do you flee Vecna and his cultists, or stand your ground and fight?"
We all think until Dustin speaks up, "I say we fight....to the death."
"To the death," Mike repeats.
"To the death," we all start chanting. We start taking our chances and rolling our die. Some of our troops start dying. It is now Dustin and I left.
"Time out! Time out!" Jeff shouts.
We all huddle in and start planning, "guys, I hate to say this, but we've got to flee," Gareth says.
"I concur," Jeff says.
"Vecna just decimated us. We can't kill him with two players," a new member I've never met before says.
"You too? He only has fifteen hit points left. Don't be pussies," Dustin says.
"Pussies? Really? 'Cause we're not delusional?" Gareth argues.
"Delusional? We're just not cowards," I say.
"Hey," Eddie calls. We all turn towards him. "If I may interject gentlemen, (your D&D name). Whilst I respect the passion, you'd be wise to take Gareth the Greats concern to heart. There is no shame in running. Don't try to be heroes. Not today, 'kay?"
"One sec," Dustin holds out his index finger and we turn back into a huddle. "What do you think?"
"How many hit points do you and (your D&D name) have left?" Mike asks.
"Twelve," Dustin and I both say.
"It's risky as hell," Mike tells the two of us. "But you're the ones in the battlefield, so it's your call."
"What do you say, (your D&D name)?"
"You should already know what I'm about to say," I smirk.
"Screw it," Dustin says. We all get up from the huddle and walk towards the table. "Let's kill this son of a bitch."
"The chances of success are twenty to one."
"Never tell me the odds," Dustin puts out his index finger and shoves it in his face. "Give me the D20," Dustin puts out his hand and Eddie throws him the die. Dustin rolls the die but it lands on an eleven.
"That's....a.....miss!" Eddie swings his head like a maniac.
"No!" We all 'boo'. It is now my chance to roll the die and decide our fate. I grab the die and start shaking my hand.
"Blow on it Dustin. For luck," while shaking it I move it towards Dustin's face. Dustin blows on it and I close my eyes and release the die. It rolls for a while until it stops. We all look to see the number. It's a twenty! "Aye!" I jump up and down.
"What?!" Eddie looks at me. Eddie smiles and me and bows down showing the D&D game with his hands. I smile back while clapping my hands together in celebration with the others. They all bring me into a hug and Eddie frolics over to us and joins in. We all release from the hug and the club members start to leave. I promised Dustin and Mike I would give them a ride home.
"Bye Eddie," I give him a hug goodbye.
"Bye," he smiles.
"Are you wearing makeup?" I tilt my head.
"What? No," he laughs.
"Yeah, you're wearing blush," I use my thumb to try and wipe off his makeup.
"Hey. Stop," he forces my hand off him face.
"Whatever," I start walking backwards. "See you whenever!" I wave. Eddie waves back and Mike and Dustin follow me into my car. "Buckle up, kids." I put on my seatbelt and adjust my mirrors.
"What's up with you and Eddie?" Dustin asks.
"What do you mean?" I laugh and turn on the car.
"You guys wouldn't stop smiling," Mike says.
"Cause we haven't seen each other in like years."
"Yeah, but it just seemed off. You and Steve are dating and if-" I cut Dustin off.
"Whoa! Eddie and I just have history, okay? He's older then me and I graduated before him, guys. The only thing we've done was kiss-"
"What?!" They both lunge out of the back seat.
"Geez, don't get all like that. It was for a game."
"Oh, does Steve know that?" Dustin asks.
"No, why would he need to know that? It's in the past."
"He's your boyfriend. You guys should tell each other everything," Mike says.
"He doesn't tell me everything. Why should I?" I look at the through the mirror and back at the road.
"How do you know that?" Dustin asks.
"I just know. He's been acting weird. Whenever him and Robin are talking all secretive and quiet and I walk in they just stop talking and start working."
"Oh, are you jealous?" Dustin smiles.
"No, I just feel left out. I don't have a reason to be jealous. I trust Steve. Nancy always give me weird looks whenever I come to pick you up," I glance at Mike. "I feel like she doesn't like me dating her ex, but her and I were never close you know."
"Yeah, I get it. You gonna confront him?" Dustin gives me an eager look.
"No, I don't want to start anything. Even if he starts things, I don't."
"He starts things?" Mike squints.
"Yeah, he does, believe it or not. That dude is a jealous freak."
"I can see it," Dustin nods his head while looking into the distance.
I laugh, "whatever we just said in this car, stays in the car, you got it?" I park in front of Wheelers house and turn towards Mike and Dustin. "No telling Steve about Eddie. No telling Steve about anything I just told you."
"Yes ma'am," they say simultaneously. They both roll out the car and dart for the door.
"Nerds," I mutter to myself and turn up my music.
