Chapter 29

We were driving away from the graveyard as Max had her headphones on her head. The whole car ride was silent because of what had just happened.

Robin and Nancy told us that they'll meet us back at their place so I was driving back there.

We park by their drive way and walk through the front door. Mrs. Wheeler was on the phone and turned towards me with a frown.

"Y/n, it's for you," she hands me the phone. I tilt my head in confusion and put the phone up to my ear. Everyone went down to the basement besides Steve.

"Hello, Y/n Johnson here," I greet whoever it is.

"Hello Y/n, I am Janet from the IU Health Simon Cancer Center."

My heart races.

"We're calling to inform you that your Grandma has died from Stage four Breast Cancer."

"Oh-uh, thanks for telling me."

"Goodnight Ms. Johnson."

"Goodnight," I hang up the phone with tears in my eyes. I try not to let them run out my eyes. I start to walk to the bathroom when Steve stops me.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Steve asks gently.

I ignore him and walk to their bathroom. Steve gets to me before I can shut the door.

"What happened? Talk to me."

I just stare at him with glossy red eyes, "I was just informed that- that my grandma died from stage four breast cancer." His face falls. He shuts the door and he rushes to give me a hug. I wrap my arms around his neck and his arms around my waist.

"It's okay," he says in my ear gently.

My nose suddenly starts to bleed. I wipe it with my crewneck sleeve thinking nothing of it. I start to fall down and Steve falls down with me. His back against the wall hugging me tightly as I cry into his chest.

"Why my family?"

"What?"

"Why them? Why not me?" I sob lightly.

"Don't say that," he frowns.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?" Steve asks with a light tone.

"For bringing you into my shit. You shouldn't have to be here right now. You should be down in the basement laughing with everyone."

"Hey, I would rather spend my time with you then anyone else. Okay? Nothing you do will make me annoyed of you."

I push on his chest to prompt myself up, "thanks, Steve."

I start to stand with Steve's help. I look into the mirror and turn on the water. I start flicking my face with water until it's not obvious I had just cried.

I shakily let out a breath and open the door. Steve and I walk down to the basement to see Nancy and Robin passed out.

"Where have you two been?" Dustin smirks.

"Making out," Lucas jokes. I fake laugh to make it sound like I'm alright.

"What's wrong? Max asks, with her headphones still on her ears.

"Nothing. I'm just tired." I smile weakly. Steve sits down on the couch and pats the seat next to him. I lay down on his chest with his arm over me. I feel Max cuddle up to my leg and rest her head on my hip. I fall asleep as Dustin stays awake and Lucas drowses off.
