Amy's pov
I didn't want to get up out of the makeshift bed I have here, but I needed to. During the war they came in and started shooting up the houses. They set everything on fire in their path. Mark found a group of people who where going to a safe area, which I am in now. I tried to take both kids but they only let me take on. Mark had me take Mia as he had Niko. Mark and Niko where not able to get in the truck. But he promised me that he would find us. That was 5 years ago.
"Mom." Mia said walking into my room.
"I am up honey, how did you sleep?" I sat up looking at her.
She shrugged her shoulders looking at the empty space next to me in bed.
"I know honey." I said, "I miss them too."
"Why didn't they let them come with us?"
"They said that there was not enough room in the truck."
"We where smashed."
"I know, but your father promised and he has never broken a promise to us. We will see him and your brother again."
I got up and got ready for the day, I am in charge of the food here. Making sure that everyone has enough to eat and that the plants and animals are taken care of.
Mia got ready as well then walked to the school a few blocks down from our home. We are now in what used to be the state Colorado. There are some crops that grow here, but with the little rain that we have been getting this year, not much is coming from the crops.
"Amy, you need to do something about the food." Clifford said as I walked into the garden.
"I can't make it rain. I can only give them enough water that you allow me to use."
"We need to save our water. We don't have much left."
"Then there is not much I can do about it. Is there anyway we can send people out to go look for water? There has to be a stream or a well near by."
"Stay in your lane." He growled at me, "I am in charge of sending people out of here, and right now it is too bad out there."
"I don't even know what is out there."
"Good, you don't need to. All you need to worry about is making sure we have enough food."
"To do that I need water. The animals are going to need more as well."
"Are you talking back to me?" He took a step forward closer to me.
I stood my ground, " No, I am telling you that I need more water to do my job. Unless you want me to tell Kubus."
"You will leave Kubus alone." He growled.
"Then find me a way to get me more water."
I walked away from him.
He is a pain in my ass, once we came into this safe place he hit on me like crazy. I kept telling him that I am married and that Mark will show up but there are some things that I was forced to do that I am not proud of. I needed to make sure Mia had food and clothes.
I shook the thought of Clifford out of my head and started to tend to the gardens.
"Look how much crops we have." Michelle said walking over to me.
"If we had some rain we would have more."
"I don't understand why it hasn't rained. But when it does it will flood the place."
