Amy's Pov

"Come on, we need to go!" I said grabbing the last gallon of water that needs to go down.

"What's taking so long, the horn is gonna go off." Mark rushed up the hatch.

"I don't want to be down there tonight." Our 6-year-old daughter whined.

Mark picked her up taking her down, I did one last check on the doors and windows making sure they are locked then headed for the hatch. Mark yanked my arm pulling me down, as soon as he locked the hatch door the horn went off.

"That was close." He said holding me tight.

"Sorry," I said dropping the water onto the ground holding on to him.

"It's okay, we all are safe."

He kissed the top of my head then I made dinner, well more like plated it.

"Mom, do we have to stay down here?"

"Yes, once morning comes we can go back up."

"I hate being down here." She whined.

"Trust us, Amber, we don't want to be down here either," Mark said loading up the guns.

"Do you have to be on watch tonight?" I asked.

"There were talks at work that they will be over here tonight."

This stupid war, they only fight at night to give the element of surprise but it's still horrible! We have to stay in the bunker or we might be hit in the crossfire.

"Eat up." I gave Amber her plate.

"Thanks, momma."

"Mark, please." I put his plate in his spot.

"Amy." He begged.

"Please." I closed my eyes trying to hold my composure.

Just one night, we all eat a meal as a family. We haven't done that in almost a year, that's when this bullshit started.

He let out a small sigh but walked over.

"Thank you." I held back the tears.

This stupid war is taking my family away from me.

I got my plate together then sat at my seat, we said a little prayer then ate.

"What did you do at school today?" Mark asked Amber as he cut into his chicken.

"We learn about history and Monday we get to do an experiment!" She had a mouth full of chicken as she talked.

"That sounds like fun!" I said.

"Can I go to the zoo on Friday? The school is taking us."

Mark and I looked at each other, we both gave the same look.

"We will talk it over and let you know," Mark said eating more of his dinner. He has to be starving, he has been giving me and Amber his food. I put a lot on his plate to make up for it.

"I hope Jenna comes back to soon school. I miss her." Amber said then took a bite of chicken.

Mark and I stuffed the chicken in our mouths, Jenna was killed last week. She left the hatch during the night and someone shot her from outside. We don't have the guts to tell her so we told her she was visiting family in a different state.

We were halfway done with dinner when the gunshots started.

"10," Mark said.

The gunshots are 10 miles away.
