I was back in my parent's penthouse standing on the balcony staring over New York City.
Why was I here?
Looking around I spotted younger selves of all my friends, and Kate who stared at me curiously.
"Adrian, are you okay?" she asks and I nod as my mind put the pieces together of where I was.
Not this again.
Running to the elevator I pressed the button harshly but it never lit up.
Fuck.
"Where are you going mate?" Nico asks his voice fading out as I panicked, looking around for some sign of it coming, or some way to get to them. Pulling open the emergency exit I begin running down the stairs as fast as I could, my footsteps echoing as I practically threw myself down the stairs. My breathing was becoming heavy and more laboured until finally I burst through the door in the lobby, my eyes tearing from how dry my throat felt.
Pushing past the doorman I ran from the building I headed towards the street. That street. Where my fathers Jaguar would round the corner any second now and be hit by that car.
I started counting streets one by one naming them off in my head and counting down to the location the pole where my parents would be dead and half wrapped around their blood splattering the broken glass, and the interior if I didn't get there on time.
Five streets away, four, three.
I heard the engine now the low growl that was getting louder and louder.
Two streets, one.
My dad's car rounded the corner, and I could see them, my dad's smiling face as he looked at my mom. Love and admiration were there the kind that only a couple who had been together nearly fifteen years could have, the kind that characterized them.
My mom had always looked at him, always been there for him and supported him. She was the best thing to enter his life. I had heard my dad say it not through words but through actions, they spoke so clearly how he would protect her, and hold her when she cried.
"Mom, dad," my voice betrayed me breaking, before I spotted the car speeding towards them, and I broke out in a run.
Fuck, fuck, fuck.
As I neared the Jaguar my parents spotted the car, before it cascaded into the side of the vehicle as I yelled their names.
Shooting up in my bed I was sweating, breathing harshly, and on the verge of tears, the pale light of New York taunting me as distant horns told me they city was still awake.
Trying to calm myself I ran my hands through my hair the memory flashing before my eyes, and coiling in my chest because I'd have this dream again. It happened at least once a week, and no matter what I did I had never been able to save them, not once, I couldn't save them then, and I couldn't save them the forty or so times I've had that dream, each slightly different but it always ended with me not getting there in time.
Pushing out of my bed I crossed the dark bedroom of my penthouse to the window and looked over New York. The city was beautiful at night, and I loved every single thing about it.
However, New York was a city with problems. I had been alive when the two thousand eight financial crash hit, and ruined the real estate market, I had heard my parents talk about how one of the same companies that caused it cleaned up the mess for more money.
Gangs now ran the underground world, standing in the background, and though I was a part of that I had a neutral stance when it came to that.
I was a background member as much as a central one only really being involved when it came to major decisions or getting someone to talk, usually some kid who'd been living on the street most of their life and got into a bad place. Then there was the several illegal casinos where I theorized that some of my members were money laundering but I never considered that to be a way to go about getting money, I just took my cut, which I'd been documenting carefully from the beginning.
