Olivia Thorne
Walking out of Williamsburg Preparatory I started on my way to Starbucks for my four-hour shift that would end at eight which was always something I preferred since I got to sit and essentially talk to Sam for four hours while periodically making people their drinks.
As I got to the side walk to cross from Williamsburg into Stuyvesant, I glanced over in hopes of seeing what could possibly be at the light today but there was nothing which had for a while been my main form of intrigue post school since I was bored through most of my classes the exception being my socials, and art classes where me and my friends were a little bit crazy.
When the light changed, I crossed and began making my way to work though it wasn't particularly difficult since it was so close to where I crossed, and not far from my house.
I could also hear the traffic passing above me as I walked under the bridge heading from Williamsburg into Manhattan, and remembered how just days ago I'd gone into Manhattan for a purpose outside of visiting Angela, or to pass through with my mom to go to the ski resort we'd been to many times when I was younger. I wouldn't ever know the name of the boy I'd danced with, and even if the aftermath had included an irritated Demetri driving me home after he insisted that I come out or he'd come in to find me. It was probably the best part of the last month.
Half an hour later I reached the glass doors of the Starbucks I worked at and stepped inside and immediately found Sam behind the counter dealing with orders from a line of customers.
"Hi Sam," I greet rushing towards the back while gaining her attention for a brief second.
"Hi Olivia," she smiles before I disappear and quickly drop my stuff before pulling on my apron, and heading out to the front with my hair in a ponytail.
Standing at the second counter I helped to avert the overload of orders that Sam was dealing with and within ten minutes we had gotten rid of the post school rush alone with made more coffees in all varieties then I think we'd ever made since I started working here.
Within the next hour things began to slow down at an alarming rate which was usually odd but sometimes that was nice; however, shifts were occasionally boring, sometimes they were quick and I enjoyed all the work I had to do other times I wondered if watching paint dry would be more entertaining.
This seemingly was one of those shifts. Sam and me had been reduced to standing around talking about what had been happening in our lives recently.
"So, what about you, what has happened with that boyfriend and crazy friends of yours?" she asks after she had finished telling me about some of the weird things that she had experienced at school in the past week.
"We'll me and Demetri had a messy incident but I've taken time to forgive him for it, and move on, while my crazy friends and I spent one afternoon by the Hudson River looking up Thornbrook Academy, along with the pictures of their really attractive polo team," I say.
"Please tell me there were at least a few good-looking rich kids."
"Oh my god," I mutter at how excited she seemingly got at the idea.
"Well, were they?" she presses.
"Some of them were," I reply choosing to negate the dark-haired boy who even through the photo of him, seemed powerful.
"I could only imagine going to that kind of school, where the cities richest sent their children. It probably even smelt expensive, that school what did you say it was called?".
"Thornbrook."
"Sounds like it was named after you," she comments, and I just roll my eyes.
"Yeah, I don't come from money, let alone the one percent of this city," I say before a straight black-haired girl enters the restaurant and I prepare to greet her.
"Hello," I say with a smile.
"Hi could I please have a tall flat white with extra foam," she says pulling out her card, and I just nod putting in her order.
"Name for the order?" I ask looking up after selecting the name
"Nikita," she says.
After allowing her to pay before I walked away to make it as Sam went through stocks to make sure she was being useful.
When I had finally finished making the drink which was one of my favourites, I brought it to the counter setting it in the pickup area.
"Flat white for Nikita," I say and she walks over giving me a smile before walking out of the store and over to her car which I realized was a bronze painted BMW I8.
I wouldn't own one even if I had the money, but I could see how someone may want one out of brand loyalty, or simply that it had been out for the past four years, which likely meant it was used.
"Thoughts on our customer?".
"Honestly I'm just wondering about the prevalence of sports cars outside this Starbucks, like does this happen to other places in this franchise?"
"I doubt it, unless it's the ones in Manhattan," Sam says.
"Yeah probably. We were talking about one of the Manhattan rich kids of this city. My friends and I," I say.
"Which one there's dozens," Sam says changing out the container of ice.
"Ever heard of Adrian Winters?" I ask as I began to clean up the counters now that there was a lapse in customers.
"No, though the last name sounds like the name of that major company in the Financial District."
"Apparently he is the son of some really powerful people, some of New York's wealthiest," I sigh.
"Imagine," Sam exclaims giving me a look that I ignored while the memory returned of standing among the wealthy of New York.
"I can't, I can't even comprehend the life people like him must live," I reply deciding to leave out that I'd gone at all since she would probably interrogate me for information just like my friends would.
Sam laughed lightly and I just shook my head before going back to work for the next few hours that we were here.
When it was close to eight, I saw a guy in a grey hoodie, and pants with a cigarette along with several other people all walking along the sidewalk like they owned the place before seeing the auburn hair of Demetri and it shocked me especially since I had noticed the guns, they all carried.
I thought it was illegal to own a gun as a teenager.
Walking away towards the back I changed out of my apron and walked back out to the front to check out of my shift.
"Bye Olivia," Sam calls to me and I give her a smile as my mom pulls up outside and looking over the car, I don't see Demetri but I am almost a hundred percent sure that he was who I saw.
Pushing open the doors to the coffee shop I walked out to the car, and pulled open the door before sliding into the passenger seat.
"Hi mom," I greet with a smile as I pulled the door shut.
"Hey Olivia, how was your shift?"
"Good, kinda slow though," I reply as she drove off towards the house.
"Sometimes that's nice," my mom says looking over at me before we went into silence while she drove, though music filled the car and we both sang along under our breath until she had parked by the curb of our home.
Pushing open the door to the car I slid out and walked up the steps to unlock the front door before stepping inside and kicking off my shoes before my mom followed seconds after.
I then went upstairs and got undressed before showering since I felt dirty after my shift, and only once I had finished cleansing myself, and washing my face did I finally pull on a hoodie and get into bed to watch Euphoria until I fell asleep.
Damn I added stuff and it's still short I apologize, oh well long book it redeems me here, comment, vote, and share. Anyways
Peace✌
