When Dr. Rivers arrived at the Veterans' ward with Tori, they stopped at the nurses' station. The nurse was glad to see Tori and Dr. Rivers. She smiled at her. She then passed Dr. Rivers the gift box. He then passed it to Tori. He asked her to hold it for him. She did as she was asked. The nurse then passed Dr. Rivers the bag with Tori's school clothes in it. He hung the bag on the handle bars of the wheelchair. Dr. Rivers thanked the nurse.
The nurse then gave Dr. Rivers Will's room number. She finally told him that Will doesn't know he has visitors today. She said that she wanted to surprise him. He didn't have many visitors. She told Dr. Rivers that Will hadn't seen his father in awhile now. She told him that Will was confused why.
Suddenly, Tori burst into tears. The nurse and Dr. Rivers were concerned. They were confused. Dr. Rivers then went to Tori. He went to her level. He asked her why she was crying. She told him that she felt guilty her brother couldn't see their dad because of her. Dr. Rivers wiped her tears. He told her that it wasn't her fault. The fall and the hydrocephalus just happened he told her. He just told her that she would feel better just seeing her brother. He then took her to Will's room.
When they arrived at Will's room, the door was closed. Dr. Rivers parked Tori then opened the door slowly.
When Dr. Rivers opened the door, Will was sitting in his chair unaware the door opened. He was staring out the window. Dr. Rivers quietly pushed Tori in the room. He then quietly closed the door behind him.
When the door was closed, Tori observed the room. There was a hospital bed. There were 2 comfy chairs one was at the window and the other was beside the bed. There was a night table beside the bed. Dr. Rivers placed the gift on the night stand. He then carefully lifted Tori from her wheelchair to the comfy chair beside the bed. He made sure she had her bears and doll. He put his finger to his mouth to tell her to stay quiet. He then walked over to the window where Will was sitting in his chair.
When Dr. Rivers approached Will, he put his hand on Will's shoulder. Will looked at Dr. Rivers he was surprised to see him. Dr. Rivers was positioned in a way that Will couldn't see his bed where Tori was. Will asked Dr. Rivers why he was there. Dr. Rivers had to lie a bit. He told Will that his father asked him to check on Will because Dr. Moore was busy with a patient's test results. Dr. Rivers told Will that Dr. Moore had a surprise for him. He then told Will to close his eyes and he would guide him to his bed.
When Will closed his eyes, Dr. Rivers helped him stand from his chair. He then walked Will slowly towards the bed. He gave Tori a look to stay quiet. She did. Dr. Rivers then sat Will on the edge of the bed. Dr. Rivers then quietly lifted Tori from the chair on to the bed. She had her bears and doll with her. She stayed silent like she was supposed to. Dr. Rivers then grabbed the gift box from the night table. He placed it in Will's lap. He then told Will he could open his eyes.
When Will opened his eyes, he saw the gift box on his lap. He then felt that someone was sitting beside him. He turned to see Tori sitting beside him. He was confused why she was there let alone why she had a hospital gown and IV in her arm. He wondered what happened to her because her brown curly hair wasn't like it was when he saw her a few weeks ago. He noticed the left side of her head above her ear had no hair and was replaced by a scar. Tori knew she had to explain everything to her brother, but she was scared to.
It was time for Tori to explain to her brother what happened. She first told him that she fell in her dorm the day after open day. She explain while tears streamed now her face that she tripped over her feet and hit her head on her trunk. She told him that she lost consciousness. She told him that that was why their dad had to leave the hotel so abruptly. She told him about the emergency operations. Dr. Rivers told Will that he assisted with them.
