Tori's Gift & First Day of Recovery

The morning after the girls heard about Tori's operation was just another ordinary day for them. They were in their usual routine, but today they were excited for domestic science for a change. They knew they were going to be making something for Tori. They always liked to brighten her day.

Once they arrived in class, they sat around the table. They saw a pattern for a soft fabric hat. They saw another pattern on the table as well. It was a a pattern for doll's clothes. The pattern was for something medical. Not a usual thing like a dress. The girls didn't know what it was, but Darrel figured it out. They were making a hospital gown for Tori's doll. They saw Tori's doll's nurse's dress too. They saw bright yellow fabric as well they figured that was for Tori's hat to go with her school uniform. They saw white fabric too. Darrel told the girls that the hospital gowns were white. She said that her dad showed her them once. They just had to wait for Ms. Pots.

Meanwhile in the hospital, Tori is being woken up by her nurse. Tori was in her room on the neurosurgery ward. It was still not 24 hours since her operation. The nurse told her that she was taking her to have a post op exam done. Tori understood. She knew her dad and Dr. Rivers would be preforming it.

The nurse saw Tori was scared. She thought that it was a good time to explain things to Tori. She told her that she was taking to her a special examination room. She told her that other nurses would be in the room along with Dr. Moore and Dr. Rivers. She continued to tell Tori that her diaper would be removed and that her bandages would be removed, so Dr. Moore could examine her shunts. Tori thought it made sense that both would be checked. She reminded Tori that Dr. Rivers would want to check her polio affected limbs as well.

It was time to take Tori down to the examination room. The nurse got the bed from the hall. She then lifted Tori from her bed onto the other bed. The nurse told her she could have one comfort item. Tori's bears and doll were on her bed. She told the nurse she wanted her doctor bear. The nurse gave Tori her doctor bear. Tori told her mum to go visit Will while she was gone. She told her mum to take her doll to Will. She told her mum that Will would feel comforted having it. Mrs. Moore went over to Tori. She kissed her good bye. The nurse then took Tori. Mrs. Moore then made her way to the Veterans' ward.

Meanwhile back in class, Ms. Potts arrived. She saw the girls around the table talking. She then got their attention. She told them that they had a project request by Dr. Moore for a soft fabric hat for Tori. She then told them that the doll clothes was Miss Greyling's idea. She told the girls that Miss Greyling thought that if Tori's doll had a hospital gown that she would feel like she wasn't alone and could process things better. They understood because they saw how Tori was struggling.

It was time for Ms. Pots to assign who was going to make what. She assigned Darrel to make to doll's hospital gown. The other three girls were assigned the hat. She told the girls that the hat was important and needed to be precise that's why they were working on it together. She told them that she would assist them as well. She told them that she precut the fabric for the hat. The girls began their assigned items.

Back at the hospital, the nurse wheeled Tori into the examination room. Tori saw that there were 5 people around the table. There were 3 nurses with her dad and Dr. Rivers. The nurse lifted her from the bed with her doctor bear and carried her to the table.

Once at the table, the nurse gently lay Tori down. Tori saw that her dad was at the head of the table. He put his hands around her head. He saw her bear he smiled under his mask. He told her that her doctor bear would definitely help with her examination. He told her that she was getting a thorough post op examination. He told her that her braces would be removed, then her abdominal bandage by one the nurses. He told her that he would remove her head bandage. She understood. Dr. Rivers told her that one of the nurses would remove her diaper too. He told her that they needed her to be naked to do her examination. She was ready for whatever her dad and Dr. Rivers had to do.
