Hameed's POV
"I want to marry you" I told her
"Bring a ring then." She casually said, not understanding that I was in all seriousness. But she was my queen, and her wish was my command. So I heeded her words and got a ring, the most beautiful one I could get from one of the fanciest jewellery vendors in Sokoto. I wished I could get her something fancier from Lagos, but I wanted to get my assurance as soon as possible. I'd keep that at the back of my mind for when the time for us to get married comes.
Oh! I can already imagine all kinds of extravagant stuff I'll do for Khayr. I was literally created to make her happy at all costs and I'm only doing my job.
So I continued to drive down one of the longest highways of Sokoto, to Arkilla. You probably guessed right, I was going to meet Khayr. She went out with some friends, and while they were together, I called her and asked if this lowly subject of hers could be privileged to see her face, before I leave for Maradi the next day for school.
What I hated more than anything, going to the damned school. But I understood that if I really wanted Khayr to be mine, I needed to bag that degree, and also, with my side business of selling fabrics here in Sokoto which a trustworthy friend takes care of on my behalf, I believed I'd make an image of a promising suitor in the eyes of her parents when I eventually seek for her hand in marriage.
I parked my car outside of Red Camel and walked inside, sweat building around my palm as I clenched the ring case nervously in my palm. I saw her sitted alone on a table at the far end of the room and instantly felt bad for making her wait. I thought I'd see her with her friends or something. I looked around the restaurant and felt glad that it was empty except for the workers. I didn't want any customer gawking at my property.
"Sorry I left you waiting" I hastily apologized, taking my seat across the table. Khayr was blankly going through her phone but instantly brightened up, owing to my prescence.
"Come on, it's nothing. You're always such a drama queen" she laughed
"Why didn't you order anything? Where are your friends?" I asked.
"I ate with them..and I shooed them away because you said you were coming. Or I should call them back?" She grabbed her phone jokingly
"No, no" I sharply cut in. They were distraction, and I hated anything that would interfere with my sacred space with Khayr.
So I got us the VIP booth and we moved into it. I was someone who really cherished privacy. I would definitely dislike it when anyone as much as stares at me- me who's a nobody, or worse Khayr who's a queen, my queen.
"Here" I said, opening the ring case. I didn't waste any time, or try to do any cliche thing. As much as I could be extra atimes, I could also be very straightforward, especially in serious circumstances like this one. I was going to propose to Khayr, even though it'd look like a joke to her since there's not much of preparations. But I know within myself that I'm here with all seriousness, and I'll prove to her how serious I am soon enough when I finally bag my degree and show up at thier doorfront with my elders.
"A ring?" She confusedly asked "wait a sec Hameed... don't tell me... Oh God" she laughed, throwing her head back in realisation.
I know she took it as a joke and she's laughing because I didn't. That's why I wasted no time as soon as she asked me to get a ring, I flew to the jewellery market and got her a moderately expensive azurfa ring.
