Author's POV
The atmosphere present in the car was full of tension. It was suffocating. Sulaiman drove with his jaw clenched. He was driving from the clinic his friend Yaqub worked at. Yaqub was the one who always lent him a car whenever he was in Lagos. Sharhabila's leg was treated there at the clinic. Sulaiman didn't know why he was feeling extremely miffed.
"I'm sorry" Sharhabila muttered, noticing his annoyance. She didn't even know why he seemed so angry.
"No, you did nothing wrong. I hate myself for letting you go to that place and get yourself badly hurt like this when you'll be resuming school in a few" he said after letting out a deep breath.
He was perplexed as he speedily drove to the place after Sharhabila called him, telling him about her accident. He was afraid of running into Khayr as she was coincidentally there. Notwithstanding, there was a high chance of him running into her. It was risky, especially that he had no explanation on ground to give Khayr if he ran into her for a different reason which wasn't her. She had indeed asked him to accompany her and he didn't. It would definitely be troublesome.
He had thought about asking his trustworthy friend, Yaqub to go fetch Sharhabila on his behalf, but Yaqub was all the way in Lagos and he could have his own commitments at that very moment which Sulaiman needed him. He by calculation was much closer to the location she was at, and he didn't know how worse her wound was. He couldn't think of making her endure anymore pain while waiting for Yaqub for a very long time to go fetch her.
He turned a blind eye on all of the risks and surrendered. Sharhabila mattered to him more than anything. If he ran into Khayr he'd tell her everything. It'd definitely stir up trouble and even lead to the end of thier marriage. His image in her father's eyes and her family would tarnish and he might even lose his job. However, he still went ahead.
He pondered on another alternative. Khayr was young and vulnerable. She was also pretty much whipped hard for him. It would be easy to threaten or manipulate her. She was already a person with a naive and stupid personality.
Going to that place was definitely no different to a suicide mission for Sulaiman, but he reminded himself over and over again that Sharhabila was all that mattered to him.
"It's not a serious wound, please. You're being too dramatic. It's just a bruise which I'd recover from in no time. It wouldn't affect my studies at all" Sharhabila sighed, trying to ease him up. She hated that he was atimes too overreactive when it came to her. But it's also a good thing since it only displays his deep affection for her.
Sulaiman huffed and continued to drive in silence. He was feeling terribly annoyed that evening but at least, it's a relief that he had luck on his side. Once again, he had escaped and didn't run into his wife like he feared.
Sharhabila did not forget to chirp at him about the strange girl whom she met at the fair, the girl who helped her. She didn't go into detail because he seemed uninterested. He could not give whoever the girl was credit because she did not stayed with Sherry until he arrived. What if someone tried to hurt her again?
Sherry also had to beg him profusely to not take the apprentice boy to the police. His trepidation that evening was just too much.
Sul on the other hand was busy resenting himself. He was a man of high esteem and respect, a gentleman. He feared no one and was a very open and straightforward person. He was never sly. He said whatever was in mind, irrespective of whatever the other party would think. That was the kind of person he was.
