First half of 2024

Midnight Blues had always been a topic of discussion among netizens for the various reasons, mostly bad, but this time? It was a positive one. I was sprawled on the couch, chilling and watching TV when I came across one of the reality shows.

The reality show we had gone to last month during the promotion period.

"Fever has a separate fan base. No?" The host was saying, and I was going to skip to the next channel when the camera focus went to Jungwon. It was Enhypen on the reality show.

I paused when they showed a clip. A clip of my dance on Enhypen song 'fever'. My cheeks warmed as the screen split into two. One showing my dance and other one Jungwon as he watched my cover with a smile. Fake. I narrowed my eyes. He never smiled at me like that.

"Midnight Blues came on the show, and Teal showed us her moves on your song," the host continued. "It's her favourite song."

"She's good." Jungwon nodded, a pretty smile on his face.

I curled my hands around the remote because he didn't say that the last time we talked about it. He said and I quote 'It was fine. Whatever.' I hated Jungwon. He was a fake person.

I scoffed and switched off the TV before going to the kitchen to grab a glass of water. I passed by the music room, and saw Violet was sitting near the window, staring outside. Her fandom and mine were always on each other's neck, and this time my fans were troubling her again. The worst part was I couldn't even defend her. That wasn't how it worked in the industry. Headphones on. Her diary was open and the guitar was over her lap, and I knew better than to disturb her there. She was writing songs. In a zone. That was I too familiar with.

The doorbell buzzed. I checked on Violet, closed the ajar door and went to see the visitor. "If it's not my number one fan," I said with a bright sarcastic smile when saw Jungwon on the other side.

Speak of the devil.

"I'm not your fan." Classic him and his no bullshit attitude. "Is Ae-Cha inside?" Jungwon never ever call our leader by her stage name. Always her real name.

"She's in the music room." I opened the door wider and he walked past me to living room. "Give it some time, she'll come out. You need water?"

He was looking around the apartment living room as if he hadn't seen it before. At my question, he turned to glance at me. "Do you have a strong drink?"

"Vodka?"

"Classic Russian behavior," he muttered. It boggled my mind the first time he said that, I mean for a person who had always shown disdain to me, he knew this fact about me. That my mom was Russian. But again, maybe Violet told him.

"Yes or no?" I raised my brows, my hand automatically going to my hip.

"Water is fine, Teal." He rolled his eyes and sat on the couch. Other thing was that he had built a wall between us. Never calling my real name. Always it would be the stage name. People could call my real name in front of him for all they cared. He would still call me Teal. The idol Teal. Nothing more.

I shook my head and went to the kitchen. My eyes peeked to the living room. Jungwon was lounging on the couch where I was sitting earlier, scrolling through his phone. He paused and then glanced towards the kitchen, me. I startled, opened the drawer, and started looking through random things. I didn't dare to look at him again in case he caught my eyes, and filled a glass of water for him and myself.

Jungwon was watching the reality show his group had appeared recently when I went back to the living room. The one where he faked his appreciation for me. I gave him the glass, and sat beside him. I didn't miss the way he shifted a bit to the corner. As if I wanted his closeness. Asshole. I rolled my eyes, and pulled my hair into a high ponytail.

"What?" He was staring. At me. I looked at him as I relaxed back. He looked away. "Nothing," he muttered and finished his glass of water and relaxed back too. Eyes closed.

"Are you alright?"

"Why would you ask that?" Jungwon opened an eye at me, and I shrugged. "I'm okay. Just a bit exhausted."

"Hmmm.." I crossed my arms against my chest. "Well, Ae-Cha unnie is always thinking about us and the group in general. I guess you've those kind of thoughts as well."

"We've a filming coming up. It's called 'leaders of kpop'. She's paired with-" He stopped and turned his head to stare at me. "I just want to talk to her about it, and then I'll be out of your hair."

"Why won't you finish what you were going to say?" I frowned, and turned my head to look at him too. My eyes fluttered when I realized we were close, but if I pulled away it would be awkward, so I stayed like that. "You were going to say something."

Jung won turned away, breaking the eye contact and sat up. "Well you're too young to understand some things. Too ignorant."

"I'm not." I gritted out, and stopped myself from glaring at him. He was a senior after all.

"Okay." He dismissed me. Just like that. The door to the music room opened, and Jung won saluted me mockingly before going inside, smiling genuinely when he saw my group leader.

I hated Yang Jungwon. Truly. Deeply. Desperately.
