Walking through the streets of Brooklyn I was walking towards Manhattan I wanted to see if I could get to Central Park within two hours which meant I had been slightly jogging but oh well I had one headphone in because, well girls know.
Jogging along the sidewalks I quickly got to Brooklyn Bridge and crossed it while also managing to get past most of the traffic that got stuck trying to enter the city.
Manhattan wasn't quiet it was busy still even though it was nearly midnight though I should have known better then to not suspect something like that.
As I got over the bridge I made it to the main island before making my way north towards the centre of Manhattan.
At night this city seemed so peacefully hectic, and I couldn't quite understand fully how it was so comforting to me to see so many buildings and so much going on yet feel at ease, it simply just wasn't something I'd been expecting.
I'd always thought it would be just absolute chaos that I'd feel lost in but whatever this was felt completely normal to me, and a little bit like home.
When I finally got to Midtown I was walking along the dark streets staring up at the building around me specifically the almost impossibly tall towers that rose over the area of Manhattan where so many pricey penthouses were and proclaimed to all that this was where NYC wealth flurished.
Crossing the street I saw a line up of older BMW sedans before a group of young men got out looking no older then twenty-two and no younger then seventeen. They all also had guns I could see them strapped to their hips, or fully out though I could see one person who I did recognize.
Standing with the rest of them with his arms crossed was Demetri talking to some of them and it was then that I realized this was the group of guys I'd seen him with, but I wanted to be certain, however I also didn't want to be seen so I slipped into the opening of a side alley, and took out my phone and called him.
Within a few seconds I watched Demetri reach into a pocket and take out his phone before answering.
"Hi" he says and even his tone sounded annoyed, like I was bothering him.
Because you are.
Shut up.
"Hi" I say not really knowing what to say I didn't actually expect him to answer his phone.
"What do you want?" Demetri asks.
"I was just calling you to see what you are up to" I say though I could hear the uncertainty in his tone.
"You never do that, in fact normally you are asleep at this time of night unless you are out in public" he says and I can hear him walking until the sound echoed.
Oh no.
"You're nearby to me" he suddenly adds and the echo of his voice was louder then the steps which was when I closed my eyes and hung up completely forgetting phones make noise when you hang up.
Well this isn't going to end well.
"You suck at hiding from people" Demetri says before taking a step around the corner his face stone cold and progressively darkening. I forget decently often that he is tall to being just shy of six foot and over the past few months it was almost like I met two completely different people when experiencing him. Whenever he got his way, or was trying to make up with me he was nice to be around. Right now I knew was the opposite side of that spectrum and I didn't want it.
"I just happened to see you and I thought it might have been you, and you looked busy, so you know I just called you to confirm what I had though" I ramble, and he raises his hand, and I immediately I wince expecting to be hit but in reality he grips my chin lifting it to stare straight into his nearly black eyes.
"So snooping around the corner was the best option, instead of minding your business and asking later when I'm not busy" he says, "stupid bitch" Demetri adds before his hand strikes my face.
Then another followed, and another, and another after that.
This was the cycle I was trapped in, and didn't know where to go or who to go to, the police wouldn't do much and if they did, Demetri could hurt me a lot faster then they could get a warrent for his arrest and to actually charge him.
He was also the boss of who or whatever this group of young people were and I didn't know who else could be willing to hurt me. I also knew that he had a boss and if Demetri was like this his boss must be many times worse.
When I tasted blood was finally when he stopped his face and hands had blood on them before he took out a rag and wiped off his hands along with his face discarding it in the bin nearby.
"Get the hell out of here, I'll deal with you later" he seethes and I wasted no time going the opposite direction and racing off in the other direction abandoning my wish to go to Central Park in fear of my own safety.
By the time I stopped running I realized several things. One somehow I hadn't gotten hit by a vehicle during what must have been four jaywalking felonies, two I was in Hells Kitchen which was still funny to me that's what it was called, and three...
I was lost.
Damn it.
Looking around I quickly spotted the distant building that was clearly recognizable as 432 Park Avenue, which now meant I was too far away to easily get home without passing Demetri.
"Hey" someone calls and I turn around to see two hooded men with beards that looked mangy, the clothing they wore was slightly ripped and they were approaching me rather quickly.
Turning I started going away from them towards the sidewalk and began speedily walking away from them.
"Hey where are you going pretty lady".
"Fuck off!" I yell over my shoulder, and I hear scoffing before they ran after me and I took off down an alley hoping to escape them like I tried to escape from all my problems. Though I forgot I never have been able to escape any of them.
