"A DOG, SIR MCCARTNEY," Christine clarifies."In honor of the Companions, you are given a rare opportunity to adopt one of our association's most well-trained dogs," she says, and for a moment I was floored.
All this time, all that sketchy activity and the fancy room were all for adopting a dog? What on earth is this place? It's so extra that all I could do was laugh my pants off until Christine ended up looking at me with concern.
"Sir, are you alright?" She asks, and I took a deep breath and finally calmed down.
"No wonder why the letter told me that my life was going to change, and it was all because I was adopting a dog," I say as I wiped the tears off my face. "So how much is it? Is there anything I need to do? Will I be giving you my ID?" I ask her, and the girl shook her head and just pointed at the card that was on the counter.
"As the card you have is very special and rare, the dog will be yours for free. You only have to sign a couple of paperwork," Christine explains, which was a surprise for me. Why would a random stranger in a café give me such a card? This must have cost a fortune.
"Alright, then I'll take it. Who doesn't want to adopt a cute little dog, right?" I say, and Christine starts clapping happily before stepping out of the counter.
"Well then, please follow me so I could introduce you to the dogs," Christine then says as she leads me to a different room. The room that we went to was just a plain room painted white. There were dozens of cages too, and the dogs inside were all barking in my direction.
Okay, these aren't cute little dogs at all.
"Here are our dogs. All of them are well-trained and have been treated very well by us. There are young and old dogs, but they all deserve a loving new home," Christine says as the two of us got closer to the cages.
Okay, they're pretty cute. Maybe a little aggressive, but still cute.
"So...do I just pick?" I ask, and Christine laughs like I just said something funny.
"Mr. McCartney, you don't get to pick the dogs. The dogs pick you," she says, and just like that, a buzzer was heard, and all the cages automatically opened, almost making me run for my dear life. Why didn't she tell me anything about this beforehand? I could literally piss in my pants right now and I might never recover from the embarrassment.
"The one who will approach you will be yours, Mr. McCartney, so good luck," Christine says with a smile before stepping away from me.
My entire body froze as I watch the dogs come out of their cages one at a time. There were different kinds of dogs in the room. There was a German Shepherd, a Labrador Retriever, a Poodle, Beagle, Shih Tzu, Greyhound, and even Bulldogs. I've always wanted a dog, but when I was a kid, I was very sickly, so now that I can actually adopt one, my inner child couldn't contain himself.
A smile started to appear on my face and my body finally loosened up. As the dogs started to run in my direction, I opened my arms wide so they could approach me, but like I was some kind of unwanted chew toy, the dogs started running past me like I didn't exist.
"Seriously? Even dogs don't like me?" I ask in shock, and then I spot Christine laughing at me since she witnessed firsthand that not one dog was interested in this Dane McCartney at all.
"Christine, I don't think they—" As I was about to tell her that I don't think I'll be able to adopt any dog, I suddenly heard this big-ass Siberian Husky growling from his cage. The dog slowly walked out, and when he spotted me, the look on his eyes unconsciously made me gulp in terror because I thought he was going to eat me.
